I know I know I know I said I was leaving this. But the treatment of Christie was promoted by the tabloids (probably mostly men!) and had a distinctly racial undertone. It was nasty. He's spoken about it more recently and how it affected him when he should have been enjoying his achievements.

🤣 Thank you @Hostafan1, for lightening (/lowering) the tone 🙂

Disappointing that the women's studies lecturer wasn't able to give a more nuanced view. Men are objectified in the media. And sometimes by women amongst themselves, although I haven't experienced much of that to be honest. But in the context of the gender dynamics we're talking about, there's a huge difference between 'mmm hunky muscles' (or even 'wow, her legs go on for miles') and 'yeah, I'd do her', which is the tone of comment that is too often dismissed as 'banter'.
I'm not sure it was his " muscles " which were being focused upon.
I meant the diet coke man. It's the muscles that stuck in my mind anyway 😉

Absolutely ... reducing his achievements to that level, and giving voice to those nasty racial stereotypes put about by white males for years ... nasty nasty nasty. Â
Similar to misogyny ... reduce a woman to the size of her chest measurement or whether you can/would fuck her; whereas racism measures the value of a black man by the size of his penis and by extension his likely procreativity ... just like a stock-yard bull. Nasty Nasty Nasty

There is nothing wrong at all with people fancying other people. Catcalling women isn’t about sex it’s about power. No woman ever went up to a wolf whistling man and handed over her phone number it’s a way to reduce a female to a thing to be admired or fancied by a group of men and to show off to other males. If other males didn’t tolerate it it would stop. If silly women didn’t see it as a compliment it would stop. Just to say there are men who will have sex with a vacuum cleaner so a man wanting to have sex with you isn’t necessarily a compliment!Â
As I have said before most men are decent and kind and hate the behaviour of a few.Â
To refer to the issue of men being beaten up, that happens occasionally but men are not afraid to walk around in broad daylight, they are not scared if a woman sits next to them on a bus or asks them the time. They are not terrified to walk alone at night or have elaborate plans in place regarding texts and messages to friends. It’s not occasionally for women, it’s all the time.Â
We have all been there and being a bit drunk or wearing a short skirt or smiling at a man doesn’t make us culpable.Â
