Going to take a chance and say that you'll never beat it with that!
"I was always told that swearing is a sign of low intelligence."
I personally find it endlessly satisfying - not at anyone. There are some studies showing it relieves pain and stress - like hitting something with a stick. I think of it as personal off-gassing, which is useful as long as it's not directed at a person. The air in my house is permanently blue tinged. Don't do harm. Don't be a dick.
I’m with Fire. I love a bit of industrial grade cussing. And I would certainly like to see the evidence that correlates swearing with intelligence; that sounds like the hypothesis of a prim aunt.
As always, you write (and speak) with the audience in mind. ‘Rich’ language is perfectly acceptable in some social situations but in other instances it signals very poor judgement.
This forum, I like to think, is essentially populated by easy going adults who are not likely to indulge in lip pursing and finger wagging. What, therefore, does baffle me is the use of symbols when using the milder profanities. If you write cr@p, you mean crap. When I read cr@p, I read crap. How can one version possibly be more offensive than the other? And if the word does genuinely offend you, choose a synonym. Our language is incredibly rich - there’s a word there for every occasion (unlike French whose lexicon is the size of a slim paperback!)
On this forum I think it would be offensive to deploy would are coyly called the f, c and n words. Personally I think those words, and a few of their friends, whether in full or asterisked, are not suitable here.
