It's all fashion insanity isn't it? How many colour based racists go abroad to chase the sun and value their tan?

In all my time in India I never saw a "darker skinned" Indian in any lead roll.
I also heard some male Indian friends say " she's too dark "
Could this be because they've been influenced by the Western ideal of beauty, do you think?
unfortunately ,the overwhelming majority of those who live in India, don't match that " ideal of beauty"

Very few of us do, in whatever culture ... that's the whole point of it.  If beauty was easily attainable it wouldn't be valued ... another ideal would be desirable instead.  Again, all to do with power and influence.

That's the point ... it's not to do with colour  ... it's to do with being 'other' ... colour is simply an easily identifiable signifier.

I sometimes wonder if Donald Trump picked that exact shade of orange to avoid looking brown.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Could just be my impression but there seems more diversity re skin colour in general TV ads these days .
I've not looked into it but is there any actual reliable info on %'s of people in the UK who are not classed as "White British" ?  I'm pretty sure the 2021 Census had more "boxes" relating to ethnicity than the last one.  Don't know when the Census results are to be published or what they will show.
As for "beauty", that is always in the eye of the beholder surely .  Some people see beauty in reptiles ( just an eg ) whilst others shudder ;)
@Hostafan1 -  didn't a storyline in Coronation Street attempt to cover that ?  It rings a bell - one of the characters attempting to "whiten" their skin at some point ?

I don't think it's about beauty, @philippasmith2 though we may call it that. All these things signal our status and wealth. It makes it easy to distinguish us from them, privilege from subservience. Colour, creed, caste, class, clan. But in the civilised society that we like to believe we belong to, it's time for change.

I've just read this... I really do despair of this country.
I've put this here as the conversation seems to have moved to discussing discrimination as a whole...and it's garden related.
