    Well said, @wild edges, those are sentiments I entirely echo. The nasty, bigoted racists are, I sincerely believe, a very tiny slice of society but they get massive publicity. It distorts our perception of life on our shores.

     My belief is that we have moved a long way in the direction of tolerance and respect in the last 50 years. The United Kingdom, as Wild Edges says, is more inclusive and accepting than most other wealthy countries and that gives me hope, hope that the odious few can be crushed by others calling them out, loudly and publicly.

    It seems to me that in recent years a number of people have felt increasingly free to express views that once they would have kept to themselves. We have hate speech, threats, personal attacks against individuals or groups who are just getting on with their lives.
    I don't understand why this is happening - it's too easy to blame social media, even if that has a part. What is happening that makes so many so ready to be offensive and aggressive?

    and didn't the flood gates open during the whole Brexit debate?
    Remind me who made comments about women looking like letter boxes and bank robbers?
