  • @Wilderbeast we haven't been able to germinate parsnips for years now. No idea why they wont, so very jealous. Roasted parsnips....wonderful.
@Eustace our beetroot is brilliant this year with good size globes. Already harvested and eaten quite a few, blanched some more and into the freezer and pickled some.
  • @bertrand-mabel I put it down to heating the soil with old double glazed glass units, they were laid on the beds for about 4 weeks and the soil was really warm to the touch even down a few inches. Otherwise total beginners luck as I've never grown them before
  • I am trying an experiment this year. Conventional wisdom says you must sow direct.  The cold April, & cold wet May made germination poor,  so I grew some as plugs, I transplanted them very early so as not to disturb the root. We will see if it works or if I just get a mass of fibrous roots 🤔.
    AB Still learning

  • After last nights high winds...windfall of Beurre Hardy pears 37!!!
So just started some pear wine, then will do some in red wine and freeze them and then bottle some as well as eating some.
They don't keep very well, not like apples, but a super pear.
  • Just used a couple of pounds of prepped apples to make apple pickle this morning. First time have used apple cider vinegar,  it makes a nice spicy pickle.
  • Today prepared Beurre Hardy pears for freezing in red wine.
Another lot bottled in syrup with ginger.
2 demijohns of pear wine started and 2 demijohns of gooseberry wine bottled.
Beetroot ready tomorrow for some to be eaten and the rest either frozen or pickled.
    None stop at the moment.

Just picked the last of the runner beans and French beans and  pulled the onions , waiting for them to dry off then I’ll plait them.
leeks and parsnips still in.   Raspberry canes tied up securely supposed to be in for a rough couple of days.
Picked plenty of sage for drying and rubbing.

    Today's pickings:

Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth :)
