    @B3 - I refer you to my last paragraph.   Making sure they are fed and have clothing and a bed and some heat in winter is a basic necessity and do-able.  Improving education and letting them know there is more to life is the other essential ingredient and needs to be more than basic literacy.

    I've not seen anyone say folk with large families can't look after them.

    I watched the trailer and decided it would be upsetting. I wasn't tempted

    I read the book when it was first published … I started to watch the tv but I felt they’d left too much out for me to enjoy it so I stopped watching and read the book again. (The pictures  were better 😉)

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

    I agree the book was much better, as is so often the case. I already know what the characters look like.

    There is no direct correlation between family size and ability to look after them.  Some parents seem incapable of looking after themselves or a single child.  Other large families are very well looked after.
