If you're talking about affecting the quality/capability of job centre staff then I doubt it's the first year priority. Although a year would certainly be long enough to make changes closer to the incoming party of government to affect change nearer the areas of their interests.

Perhaps they'd cut overall benefits spend but not upgrade the staff in the first year.

Of course some political parties box clever and state they would stick to the last government spending levels for the first year. Allows a degree of blaming the last lot for longer. Remember 1997, that's a new labour playbook. Clever lot with their spin.
not talking about DWP in particular, just in general.
This lot have been in power for over 10 years, so everything is pretty much " on their watch" now IMHO
For the record, I've never voted Labour , or Tory . I've pretty much disagreed with every government in my adult life.
I'm constantly astounded by the " our party are always right, the other lot are always wrong" mentality of some voters.
It seems we're in agreement here. Ten years is more than enough time for a party to mess up on their own.

I'm of the opinion that we've never had a good government in my lifetime and although I do vote I have to hold my nose doing it. I vote because it's a right people fought for but that doesn't mean I vote for anyone or any party. I vote because I believe its right to keep the right to vote going through exercising it at every opportunity. However I tend to think I vote against a party not for a party most of the time. That's the sad truth of politics I reckon.

PS there's no heavyweights in politics these days imho. Whilst you might not agree or like them I believe the past had heavyweights that make today's generation look decidedly second rate. Heseltine,  Benn, etc. All worth more than what's left now!

    I totally agree with  you.
I remember being tears seeing folk walk for days, literally, to cast their vote at the end of apartheid .
IMHO there's less than a handful of MPs of all parties , who are worthy of my respect, my trust or my vote.

The present lot make Major and Brown look like men of integrity 🤯

All you have to do is keep repeating how good you are and how well everything is going and in general that is accepted....conversely you need proof to show things aren't good. Hancock plays word games with the word 'would' ... '...NHS patients would be tested for covid on release to care...'. So loads of unsubstantiated claims about how good your government is, tend to win. Trump was a master. He was responsible for ALL the good stuff irrespective and totally not responsible for anything that went wrong.
I gave up watching the Covid briefings as it was just a propaganda exercise for Boris et al to claim how well everything was going and how they were always in the top countries in the world for their actions and preventative measures - and now they're the best in easing lockdown and catching up with education and the NHS backlog.
I wonder how much extra the NHS get above the £350 million a week that Brexit got back for the NHS?
But isn't all this what stinks? If I propositioned a woman at work, HR would have had a field day. If I had accepted money that could be construed as bribes, I would be stuffed. If I had been inept in my job and lied about how well things were going - ditto. Isn't what Hancock and Cummings did with their relationship to business that profited from Covid all but insider trading?
I'm not certain it's just this government though. I think it's age. Each generation has their crap, corrupt governments but you don't notice so much when you're young - or at least I didn't. With age comes a bit more cynicism I think.

My husband binges in ' historical ' dramas. He doesn't appreciate it when I comment on:
    Clean clothes
    Clean faces
    Straight teeth
    Shiny hair
Trimmed and coiffed hair and beards
Bodies that get punctured by whatever never bleed enough to stain the clothes
    Horses don't sweat or shht
Even the lowliest baldrick has perfectly fitting clothes
Tents etc are clean with no tears
Most action happens in the dark
Most actors face away from the camera when speaking to facilitate dubbing
    In London. Keen but lazy.

I used to like the Sharpe series when I was a kid. Back in the days before Sean Bean got killed off in everything he starred in.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Can I add perfectly groomed horses in Westerns and everyone shaved so well back then.
The scene where Oliver goes for the first time to Fagan's is like a shampoo add . The shine off their hair is almost blinding.

Yes but that was to emphasise his angelic innocence,  Fagin was suitably grubby,  with the obligatory blackened tooth 😂

Sean Bean was easy on the eye in his youth - much enhanced by a well-fitting uniform and clean hair. This was an acceptable instance of historical inaccuracy.
