Looks promising for Thursday here. To think a couple of weeks ago we were complaining about the rain.
The weather is food and drink to the curmudgeon.

Historically since the creation of the Union Jack in the 16th century doesn't the Union Jack in reality symbolise the conquering by the English of Scotland, Ireland (Now Northern Ireland only) and Wales. These countries may have been united under one flag, but was this with consent of the people of the time.

Apparently when the union jack is flown upside down it can be seen as a sign of distress or as an offensive gesture.

Should Scotland become fully independent and N Ireland reunite with the South one assumes the Cross of St George will again become the flag of England.

Not sure about the Welsh do they seek independence?

Not sure about Scotland, didn't they have a vote to join the Union and something about a South seas investment that caused financial difficulties for Scotland or Scottish elite?

However, 1603 (before the Union Jack by 3 years) king James VI inherited the Irish and English crown so perhaps the flag is to commemorate that by joining the flag of St George, saltire of Scotland and saltire of st Patrick. Nothing to do with conquering anyone I bet. Also, not sure Scotland ever got truly conquered. Wales possibly did hence no dragon on it!!! ;)

I believe the saltire of st Andrew has precedence to the saltire of St Patrick possibly because King James was king of Scotland first. This means the white of the saltire of St Andrew shows a thicker band of white above the red of St Patrick saltire to the hanging side. It's rotationally symmetrical but not transitionally symmetrical of course. That allows for hanging upside down. Doing so is a sign of distress or insulting the crown which is technically still an offence.

As to after the end of the Union I'm not unsure if any of them could keep the flag since it's the flag of the crown surely? The crown will probably still exist for at least one of the nations after the end of the Union so wouldn't they still be able to keep it? Most likely England will because it's the only nation the doesn't really use their own national flag or anthem.

If there's one thing worse than the opposite neighbour's gardener coming along at regular intervals and shaping their many evergreens into upturned pudding basins, it's that he always does it with a much more powerful and noisy piece of equipment than necessary ... and he does it on a scorching hot day when we need the windows open to create some movement of air in the house and I'M TRYING TO WATCH THE TENNIS!!! 😡 😡 😡

@Dovefromabove I empathise.  I wish we would adopt some of the European countries stance on this and only allow power tools to be used in the mornings.  I think this only applies at weekends and bank holidays but even that would help.

The builders next door are constantly using a disc cutter for the roof today and the window fitters are non-stop with the hammer drill. The noise is bad enough but the dust is coming off in thick clouds when everyone has their windows open and washing on the lines.

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

In my book, there is at least one thing worse than the constant noise from garden machinery and that is the frequent parking of cars with idling engines.  I'ts taken 2 years to persuade a bus company to stop the practice but private car owners are still quite happy to do this - not only noise but fumes and all so uneccessary - waste of fuel, atmospheric pollution and an offence liable to fine as I understand it.  Pull over and wait for oncoming tractors, etc. - fine - pull up and sit fiddling with your phone, have a fag, just sit and gaze into the distance for anything up to half hour or more, even nip into the Cemetary to tend to a grave or visit the Church for a quiet 5 mins contemplation !!  I have to keep turning up the volume on the radio if I'm indoors or suffer the noise in the garden.
Authorities ( whether they be local or national ) taking serious measures about environmental pollution ?  Load of B******s IME.
That's my rant over - for now at least :D
Sorry @Dovefromabove - hope you can hear the Tennis ;)

Maybe they are trying to drown out the constant screaming which now seems to be required for a female player to hit the ball hard.  To me that is far more stressful than the sound of power tools
