May I ask what is wrong with sortation and why it's frowned upon?

It annoys me when you ask somehow they are and they reply....Yes.

    What's wrong with "sorting", @steveTu?

Or, better still perhaps, "Being sorted"...  ...which removes the need for "facility" as well.

...right, got you. It's not the one word but the phrase that is your issue.

What's wrong with sortation? Wouldn't 'you' say 'at the sewage filtration plant' rather than 'at the sewage filtering plant' or 'at the distribution centre' rather than 'distributing centre'? English is odd though eh?

Edited to add: Just googled it and others have had this discussion and Royal Mail used to use the term - and it's an old term (doesn't appear to be  a recent Americanism or some such) - https://forum.wordreference.com/threads/sortation.2014092/

I'd like to ask DHL what's wrong with a good old fashioned sorting office. We know where we are with one of those.

  • I like the idea of "consolidation" of orders onto lorries...  as in "This box of cakes is taking up far too much space.  Let's consolidate it a bit..."
