Ended up being quite a nice bright day here. I've done some more weeding, it's amazing how quickly they start to take over. Mowed the lawn and planted some of the new plants. Looking quite neat at the moment. I cut some leaves off the aquilegia so LEH and Gabriel Oak aren't getting quite so smothered and I can see now that, in-fact, the growth on GO isn't as pathetic as I first thought.
I've spotted that Vanessa Bell has started growing again and even has buds on - after recovering from the torturous relocation I put her through - so I'm very glad to see that!
Emily Bronte too, went all blind shoots, but now I can see growth starting in the leaf joins.
It has been bonkers weather this Spring, looking drier and warmer here for next week. I'm sure I'm not the only one wanting the long awaited buds to open without balling or being shredded by the wind..
@Mr. Vine Eye, i was hoping to see a photo of neat looking garden after all the mowing and weeding.
I need to do a lot of weeding but no chance for atleast 2 weeks. Very busy at work on weekdays and on evenings and weekend household work and kids take all the time. Atleast from a distance it all looks very neat and tidy.
@Omori, yes I do. My Eglantyne never has enough leaves and is rather leggy, despite manuring and feeding it. I meant to try Marlorena's tip of notching lower down the stem to make it bush out a bit more but because of the awful weather haven't yet been able to try it. The blooms are pretty though.
Sorry to revert back to this, just catching up with the thread. I have a trio of well leaved eglantyne, but they are very weedy and weak stemmed compared to my other roses. Could someone kindly explain what notching the lower stem is please? Tia.
@newbie77 should have said relatively neat, for me! 😄 Still have a lot of plants to go in the ground but they haven't grown on enough in their pots, thanks to the cold, to be ready to plant out.
@Rickyjones24 .. asked about notching, so without going into all the technical details I did last year, here's some examples... it's quite simple, you just make a slit with a sharp knife going left to right across the stem, directly above a bud.. choose one that's outward facing..
The notch does not need to be as ugly as mine here, my knife was not sharp enough and I had to scrape a bit, just a narrow slit is all that's required, but it should go right across the front of the cane..
Any time from now until Sept. is good... these examples I did last August with photos from today.. ..early Sept a bud starts to break.. ..today, a nice cane growing up... ..different rose, notched last August.. by Feb a bud breaks.. ..today..
..some are quicker to break than others, as you see..
Some stunning blooms coming up for everyone! Very wet here still, but garden is looking very lush. I want to try and get a lot of the perennials ive been growing on out this week, and summer bedding hardened off. Still have tulips and narcissus out! My pheno geno rose is set for delivery today, hoping to get that in this week if im up to it. I had my jab sunday (Pfizer) and feel quite rough with flu like symptoms so im resting for a few days. Definatley worth it though!
I pre ordered harkness new "95th celebration rose" despite its terrible name as an alternative replacement for the "mocka rosa" my friend got me as its just not taken when she brought it round. I just love its shape and two tone colour, arrives mid June, thought id pick the later date as something to look forward to!

Desdemona can't be too far off now:

Marlorena has explained in this page.
