@Nollie Your The Prince is to die for. Heidi Klum looks good too, I remember almost buying it once. And Astronomia makes me green with envy I've been thinking about mine and I remembered there was a rose in that spot in 2018, then a year gap in 2019... but it still could be RRD. I have at least two RRD adepts this year, I think I've been underestimating what it can do, even with changing soil and mycorrhizal fungi. @celcius_kkw Lovely photos and surely enjoyable day. We are planning some garden visits too and I am looking forward to it after not going anywhere for ages.
That might explain it @edhelka, I confess I was always puzzled by your Astronomia, given mine is such an incredibly healthy, vigorous grower. Would it be worth bare-rooting in winter and potting it up in new soil? I don’t know enough about RRD to know if that would work though.
@Marlorena, I love your dry riverbed, is it difficult to keep the gravel weed-free?
You asked about the fragrance of Soul - it’s strong. I am not the best at describing fragrance notes, but its sort of old rose, but not fruity old rose like some dark Austins, not sweet or fresh or classic. Nothing quite like anything else I have. There is a voluptuous complexity and depth to it that draws me back to keep sniffing. I will keep at it until I figure it out!

@Ditsy I’m not sure, you used to be able to order it from EU nurseries, but that’s mostly halted at the moment re Brexit. If you like the look of Astronomia there is a similar rose called Odyssey worth considering: https://www.styleroses.co.uk/buy-plants/odyssey-bush-rose

@Nollie ..thanks.. no it's not difficult to keep weeded as there is a weed membrane underneath... I hate the stuff normally but I use a particular type that I've been using for many years that I find easy to work with and doesn't seem to poison the soil underneath, and the rain drains right through, even though I use a double layer..
...I expected you to say Soul had no scent... it sounds like a wonderful rose in the right situation..
Your Astronomia is looking fabulous today... forget what it's called here.. The Charlatan? Sweet Pretty? so many names..
I don't know if anybody is watching the RHS Virtual Chelsea on its You Tube channel ?
There are lots of videos, most of which may be of limited appeal and nothing about roses that I can see apart from this 15 minute segment from Peter Beales Roses, how they prepare their stand... Ian Limmer is presenting, he's been with them 45 years, and he's not the best on camera if I'm honest, gets tongue tied, but he cracked me up with his attempt to pot up a shrub rose called 'Nozomi' using a small obelisk... he seemed to get himself tied up in knots over it...
I must say I loved the Cecile Brunner obelisk job though.. and that rose 'Pearl of St. Lukes' is one I looked up afterwards, I might have to think about that one for next winter..
Ah ok thanks @Lizzie27, not just me then. It does have such beautiful flowers but I’m wondering if the foliage being not the most attractive is enough to let it down and warrant putting something else there…well, I guess I’ll see how she does this year.
@Marlorena Can’t believe they use that many roses to do the obelisk displays at Chelsea! The upside down obelisk in the pot was an interesting idea, never thought of that but it makes sense.
I looked up what Tantau themselves said about Soul to see if that gave my any clues, they gave it 4 out of 5 stars for fragrance and say ‘enchanting fragrance reminiscent of Old Roses’ and it has that, but more, somehow. Yes if only it were more rain resistant. Soul is actually a better fragrance than Mme Isaac Pereire, which started off strong, but faded rapidly after a day or two - but that could be it’s youth. Given that climate, soil and individual noses play a part, it’s difficult to generalise, I guess.

Sounds a really good membrane @Marlorena.
I've got a new one that was sent as a replacement which is why I refer to her as the old one.
