@micearguers I very much agree, its just like slowly unpacking a present! I have Angel eyes and Eyes for you already, about 4-5 years old at least now and they are so prolific and healthy. Some of my favourites. My Albertine is just a bit younger than yours, one of the first things I planted- its a vicious beast with those thorns isnt it? Its gone crazy, we have very good loamy soil here, even with the rubbish newbuild spill mixed in, and I think the soils just slightly acidic, (heathers and skimmia etc do well ive noticed) which apparently Roses actually like. Its not got great airflow that corner I think they are both prone to powdery mildew - I gave it a good prune last year but I need to be more ruthless as its responded by growing even bigger... I'll cut some more branches out of the middle again over the weekend and give it a good spray.
'Cornelia' hybrid musk, draping the railings.. probably my next to bloom.. ..sepals on 'Autumn Damask'.. mossy glands on 'General Kleber'... a young 'Aimee Vibert' a rose noted for its luxuriant foliage... slightly tender 'Devoniensis' just taking off... another rose with nice foliage.. Hume's Blush [''Bermuda Spice''].. quite a vigorous little rose this..
Can somebody please remind me - should I be starting to feed my roses now? They had a good mulch of manure late winter and rose feed granules back in Feb/March (can't quite remember). Most of them are now in bud. Could I use up some liquid ericaceous feed I've got left over or more of the rose feed granules stuff? Many thanks.
Gorgeous @Nollie, I’m glad you posted a picture of clematis Warsawska Nike as I’ve just planted one to grow next to DA climber Shropshire Lad, I’m hoping they make a good combination. Have you got the clematis in full sun or shade. Mine is in full sun.
Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.
@Lizzie27 I think it’s perhaps a bit soon for more rose food granules as they are more slow-release, but it does depend on which one and what the box says. For something like a David Austin rose food, it’s normally early spring, midsummer and maybe again in early autumn. I would use your liquid feed in between. Depending on the K content of the liquid feed you have, maybe with a splash of tomato feed for a potassium boost to help blooming, or alternate the two each week, or half the dose of both once a week, something like that!
@Bright star it’s on an east-facing wall on a trellis/growing through a wisteria, so gets a few hours of morning sun, but my sun is stronger than your sun so I don’t think you will have a problem with full sun. Here’s a fuller pic:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Thanks Nollie, I wasn't quite sure. I've just checked and I've got Vitax Rose Feed. I have also found some seaweed liquid fertiliser so might use that at half strength once a week, at least on two or three of my under-performing roses.
Well thank you all for a very pleasant afternoon as I took a tour through this thread while outside the rain is pelting down with thunder and lightening. My DA roses, planted late last year seem to be doing well but I'm not expecting blooms just yet. As soon as the weather is more clement I shall be out and having a good look at them. The rosa banksiae is beginning its annual spectacular show - pics as soon as I'm able!
..this Bourbon rose 'Mme Lauriol de Barny' I've grown for 30 years covering various gardens.. it always flowers on or before May 15th.. it's doing well to catch up, given the Spring.. 'Queen of Denmark'.. lots of lovely buds on this once bloomer.. narrow path.. Dry Garden... 'Lady of Shalott'.. set to climb the wall..
