@newbie77 Thank you so much, that means a lot. Gardening has become very important to be and I’m feeling very connected to this garden. Maybe because it was like a blank canvas last year when I moved in. It feels like we’ve been through a major journey together.
@Omori, yes it looks rather good doesn’t it? There are some photos of it on HMF, some looking much pinker, so it may not be a very stable colour. Further sniffing reveals a whiff of farmyard manure on top of traditional old rose 😆
@Marlorena, Mme. Antoine Mari is lovely, one I’m itching to open here. I’m happy for you to post as many as you like, you and Omori with your 75 roses, thought I was bad with around 40! I was actually wondering if we might need three threads a year, a Spring, Summer and Autumn/Winter? Lets see..
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
In cold Cambridgeshire waiting for Midsummer Night's Dream, Westerland, For your Eyes Only, That's Jazz, Simple Gold, Chandos Beauty, Warm Welcome, Tottering by Gently, Claire Austin, and Albertine (a motley collection). A lot of roses have been held back by the cold period and damage from cold winds.
Today in the Cambridge botanic garden Rosa Hugonis gave a fabulous display. The Lens book on roses says it hasn't had an impact in breeding due to its chromosome count of 14. Also in this garden a fabulous Rosa banksiae 'Lutea':
@edhelka Ah you are the best type of bad influence then Glad you got a different one, be keen to see how the different ones do.
@cooldoc ah interesting, Trevor white lists it as strong scented and like that of apricots. I'll take pics when it arrives as well, I snagged the last potted one left so hoping for some good growth to start. It looks stunning, my friend described it as looking like the colour of a delicious buttercream, if it smells even half as pretty even better!
@micearguers Ooh I have a few on that list too. Westerland is new for me this year and for your eyes only - I have a few of those Persican type and they are outstanding for me so looking forward to it. My Albertine is covered in buds. It blows very easily in the rain up there and the buds stick but its very pretty. Its a bit of a beast, this is mine at the back over the shed, the slightly more reddish on the side of the shed (the rest of the left is a white rambler).
@JessicaS Westerland and Albertine are two of my favourite and more impactful roses - related to how healthy and vigorous they are. I have Westerland up against a trellis that so far works well with its upright habit with fairly stiff canes. It has very good fragrance and its flowers are glorious and ever-different looking (I think an expert here said it has mutabilis among its parents, although not easy to confirm straightaway by internet search).
The ramblers near/on your shed must produce a glorious display, as will your entire garden - such a beautiful haven. Looking forward to updates!
Albertine is now eight years old, growing up against a birch and getting into its stride. Last year it threw up, for the first time, a cane that grew 5 meters in a single year, and it has just started another one with similar intentions. Very excited to see how it will look this year.
'For your eyes only' is new to me this year. I saw it in a nursery (Beeches in Ashdon) and got it prompted by the positive views on this forum. First time growing a rose is like unpacking a present over a period of months (years, taking into account sleep/creep/leap!).
The Generous Gardener with Julia Correvan planted next to her and self seeded foxgloves ready to flower Madame Alfred Carriere with lots more buds and the very narrow planting space next to the drive
