@cooldoc Definitely, I feel like it will be winter again before we know it. Nice weather for the foreseeable future at least ☀️

Beautiful @pitter-patter, particularly love the standard, must incorporate some for next year…

heya.. welcome to roses, delighted you've found something of interest here.. and I do like your arch very much, nice and wide for 2 to walk under... nicely shaped beds too, and the bench as a focal point..

..yes Desdemona that one..   wonder how that got into B and M..

.. I've no idea about gardening in Scotland, but 'Albertine' was the Queen Mother's favourite rose I gather, and grew it at Castle of Mey in Caithness..

..Malvern Hills I'm not sure, I lost part of my plant during a freezing winter in East Anglia 10 years ago..  best of luck with your roses..

How on earth did a DA get into B&M, great find!
  • Hi everyone

Is this a sucker?  I've checked previous posts and other online pieces and my feeling is that it isn't however I just want to clarify with those of you who are more experienced, thanks.

Also this climbing / bush rose seems to be a bloom once type as all the blooms died back mid July (were dead headed as an when they faded) and there's no evidence of any potential new flower buds.

So, my next question is do I prune now?  or the usual February/March.  Have read elsewhere that a bloom once rose plant should be pruned as soon as all blooms have gone.

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks

    Carol

Hi all, please forgive another call upon  your rose knowledge...I'm likely looking for unicorns but..  I'm planning  a new 12 x 1m bed for next year in part shade. It will solely be white plants or maybe with a few blues. The bulk of it will  hopefully be made up of white  roses.I like the look of Tranquility,  but it has little fragrance.  I've been frantically looking for another similar cupped,  pure white rose with strong fragrance, but drawing blanks. Much  as I love Desdemona, its shape and flower aren't quite what I'm after. I guess what I'm asking is...   is there a  repeat flowering white rose that looks like tranquility, but is strongly fragrant?  My search has a few ideas, such as Penelope and Stephanie d Ursel, but i'd prefer more petals than they have. Best get back to clearing up after the rocking horse.. Tia.

@cazsophieq2019 Looks like a proper basal growth as it is red in colour.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth :)

Just to say Penelope is more of an apricot/cream rose rather than white, so probably wouldn't fit into your scheme. I have Winchester Cathedral which is white, fragant and repeats quite well but it is quite tall, maybe 4 ft x 3 ft here.
I'm sure the others will offer more suggestions.

So, a pure white rose, for partial shade, with strong scent.

Are you looking for shrub roses? @Rickyjones24

There was a similar question a a little while ago - someone looking for a pure white rose. The responses suggested that most roses go towards a pink tinge at times or cream...

  • Thank you for the lovely welcome everyone 🥰

@Marlorena @Omori not a clue how the Desdemona got in B&M. They had a few different roses in for £6.50 each back in June. Very glad I bought it as I love it!
I also have no idea about gardening in Scotland! Haha! I’m learning as I go. Luckily my mum and dad are keen and experienced gardeners and live just a little further up the coast so they have been able to give me some pointers. Hopefully my Malvern Hills will cope with winter here. It doesn’t get as cold here as our previous location but the weather is increasingly unpredictable everywhere.

Definitely feeling the shift towards autumn here. Although it has been very warm and humid the last few days, it is getting dark earlier now. In midsummer it barely gets dark this far North but in winter the days are very short!
  • Sorry, yes looking for  a shrub rose. I could live with a bit of a colour cast. Winchester cathedral may be the way to go and I will just  have to accept I will get random pink blooms occasionally
