first bloom first bloom on just joey… looks a bit like a dahlia! the fragrance is medium and sweet. It’s been slow to start possibly due to the lady’s mantle growing around it.
The generous gardener is getting huge / planted in April as a bare root.
I’m trying to train it along the wires.
In other news: last year I complained to harkness about a Claire Marshall rose I bought from their ex Chelsea stock. The rose was a really poor performer from the off, despite being more expensive and advertised as being more mature and bigger. They stopped replying to my emails and then this season I contacted them again because the rose was still having problems and they’re now sending me a replacement. Not a perfect solution as I bought chippendale to replace it but hey ho! It’s better than nothing!
'The Prince' 'PAoK' 'Snow Ballet', best suited for a tall pot or a raised bed. 'The Generous Gardener' Gladiolus 'Vista', I wish I had more of them, I planted 10 bulbs but the foliage gets eaten by snails and then they don't flower... my snails are weird. And my favourite 'Paul N./T.', this is quickly becoming one of my top roses... The repeat is very good for a rambler (nothing like the first flush but it never really stops producing new buds). And the fragrance is strong and very nice.
Hi, I am looking for recommendation for my north facing wall for a climbing rose - compact and not too thorny. Nollie gave me his thoughts on The Prince’s Trust and I wonder if anyone else could recommend one or two? I know it’s a difficult spot so your suggestion would be much appreciated. Many thanks!
@Sammymummy ..the north wall aspect is not a problem really, all roses will flower in that position during the main spring - midsummer flush... you may not get as many blooms in September due to lower light levels.. replacing a large rose with another is more problematic, as you would have to take precautions with the soil replacement..
My 3 top choices would be 'Climbing Iceberg', which produces flush after flush of blooms, on a sparsely thorned plant.. it just takes time to establish in some gardens..
Or 'Blush Noisette'.. which is a personal favourite of mine anyway.. as is 'Ghislaine de Feligonde'.. ...all would have no trouble in that location, and are not huge, but you could also just pick a rose of your choice really, from available lists filtering the choice for north facing..
I'm going to add a new one that I don't know that much about but it's proving vigorous, healthy and a good bloomer so far... it's called 'Pirouette'.. photo in my next post below of a bloom.. I would be happy to plant this north facing.. it's already sent up a new basal that's climbing away here.. really impressed with this rose..
@Tack, thanks and hope your new build blues get solved soon (must have completed it by the time I post this ). I too forget the names easily, so for me its easier to click 'like' at the pics/ comments then and there rather than having to remember it.

Took this earlier…wish I’d been pointing at it for dramatic effect 😜
