Adrian, I am finding that older Etoile branches are quite stiff and do break off quite easily. I was trying to ease some canes yesterday and two snapped off right away in my hand. I guess that kind of rose, trained over the long term, is going to struggle with wind. The Etoile is the only rose I lost sections of in this wind. The others bent with it.
I have potted up most of the broken parts. I have never managed to get any pieces of rose to root, so fingers crossed for this time.
I see the Historic Roses Group have garden visits organised for June... one is at Moor Wood, Gloucestershire, which is home to the national collection of rambling roses... I should love to see that ... June 24th.. hopefully they will be in full bloom by then..
'Carmen Wurth'... 'Chawton Cottage'... 'Mme Lauriol de Barny' [Bourbon 1868]... usually blooms May 15th.. that might be tough this year.. Astrantias amongst the roses... Cistus 'Thrive' one of the best small shrubs money can buy... even though they only last a few years, so I take cuttings.. it takes about 2 years before planting out...
I’ve lost a whopping cane from Etoile dH as well, but nothing like Celcius 😕 This weather has been so frustrating. There’s a break in the rain at present but it’s set to start up again for the next 10 days at least. It’s been absolutely tipping it down, and windy.
That looks like a lot of fun Marlorena, if you go please share pics?
I have an arch on the way, along with Ginger Syllabub, and Souvenir du Docteur Jamain (that one is for a different area which I hope will make mr fussy happy 🙄). Those are potted at least so I won’t have to be messing about with them in the rain.
@Marlorena I have underplanted several of my climbers with erigeron, right underneath. Everything seems to be doing well - is it best to move the erigeron?
@Fire No, there's no need to worry about your Erigeron with roses, as they do not have a dense enough ground cover.. it's seeding propensities on the other hand can be troublesome.. and you will find yourself inundated with them before too long... but they are easily removed..
..it's large, leafy plants that we need to be wary of..
@Omori I'd love to go and would take loads of pics.. but I'm not certain at this stage, domestic reasons and all that.. not to mention 3rd waves and all that business.. it would be a highlight for sure..
..at Hampton Court, in the large Old Rose border, they planted Geranium pyrennaicum 'Isparta' ... a rampant, leafy spreader.. both by the roots and seeding... it's a 'friend' of the notorious geranium 'Bill Wallis'.... take it from me, you don't want either.. I grew 'Isparta' here.. - never again...

..so,.. I'm super excited to report that warmer weather is on the way...
My bete noir is sawflies, one tends, cossets, waters and feeds, everything is looking healthy and then the b*ggers destroy all that lovely foliage.
We are enjoying a lovely sunny day and my ‘peachy’ Golden Beauty posted earlier already looking less peachy:
