Lovely combination @Bright star. I agree, the penstemon tones beautifully with Lady Em’s foliage in particular. Speaking of which…
A potted Lady Em in just a couple of hours of late afternoon sun has a much better colour for me than the trio I have in the sun (the latter more pink and washed out):
Lady of Shallot, also potted at the moment, much happier than in the former full sun position, put on 3ft of growth since April:
Julia Child bloom, colour in the cool morning light and then this afternoon in sun:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Bare root pre orders are open at David Austin! I am going to order Lady Hamilton and Munstead Wood, are there any other roses likely to sell out fast? This is my first year growing roses, so if there are any must have ones please make suggestions. Thanks! (Already have Alnick, Boscobel, Roald Dahl, Olivia, young Lycidas,PAoK and Lady of Shallot.)
Just received the awaited email. Lady Em, Munstead Wood & Desy secured for autumn delivery. Get em quick
Bouquet of the Day, a DA tricolour, MW and The Poet's Wife rescued before the rain sets in. The Lark Ascending doesn't need rescuing from anything but just to add some extra colour.
Rose of the Day, Leda. It seems to have taken ages for these buds to open unless I've been checking on it too often.
A new one opened up, the Portland rose. It's similar in colour to my Galllica off but starts from a red bud. Fragrance is nice but need a nice day for proper testing.
I had to step back a couple of metres to get a proper colour on the photo. It's at the limit I dare go planting roses in that part of the shady border and only gets early AM sun. Also I forgot about the camassia on the sun side of it so it did well to get its head above the cam leaves blocking the sun. Like it! Oh, the yellow is an obliging patio called Our Dream(s). Unfashionable I suppose but it doesn't put a foot wrong.
Styles bare root preorders are open! After yesturdays austin quick grab of lady Em and Munstead I Snagged all 3 I wanted; fabulous, simply gorgeous and koko loko. Had to close it before i got tempted any further!!
'Bordure Camaieu', a colourful rose 'Super Excelsa' Unknown red 'Our Beth' with 'Claire Jolly' A little bit weird angle to get the full 'Lavender dream' in the photo and to show the current size of geranium 'Azure Rush'. 'The Prince', 'Reine des Violettes', 'Belle de Crecy', 'Joie de Vivre', dianthus, heuchera.
I think I've admired your Leda before @Victoria Sponge, nice to see it again with the same positive reaction. Gorgeous sunny coloured roses there @Nollie. If I were to order another DA it would be RoalD or Lady Em.
Today was not as good as forecast but spent it outside anyway, mostly demolishing an old dog kennel. Hopefully the Ammi Majus and Delphinium survive any downpours, the Ammi was horizontal last time but doesn't snap luckily. Royal William, Alexander and St BonifaceAlexander, keeps its colour wellMy second Carminia bloomMy mis- delivered Millie Desdemona responding to the gloomy weather recently I think by being colourful
@edhelka i love that bordure. @Tack oh gosh that desdemona is stunning!
My rose of the day is unquestionably 'Copper lights' Difficult to photograph but oh my goodness the colour! The petals have beautiful paler edge highlights.
Yippee! I finally got a single flower on ‘Marie Louise’. Resolving to feed more next year and tie in the spindly growth to a support to encourage more flower production. It can ball horribly in the rain, but the scent is amazing.
@Mr. Vine Eye how old is your Malvern Hills? It looks so lush! Does it produce hips in autumn?
Hi, it's in its third year now (so 2 years old) it does make little round hips if you leave the flowers on. I've only had a couple but that might be because I just happened to have removed most of the flowers last year.
