Lots of gorgeous gardens! Love that LEH in a pot @cooldoc im planning to do that once its back in stock. Heres my latest opening, more lady of shallot with nepeta six hills giant Colonel mustard, looking stunning. Nice fragrance too. Not sure it really goes where ive planted it now I see it in the flesh, might need to tweak planting but will see! First great western starting to open. Lovely so far.
Home from the holidays and, at last, a few roses of my own to share! Things have just exploded whilst we were away.
Chartreuse de Parme - lots of blooms on this one! Lovely Parfuma...although I prefer its more romantic name Rosengrafin Henriette-Maria (is that right?) Perle d'Or My old climber 'Meg', always reliable although she was several times the size at Sissinghurst!! And Mutabilis with, among other things, foxtail lilies. I was glad we hadn't missed these!
@bullfinch all my roses are in pots.. They would definitely do well.. atleast for 2 years I guess.. Terracotta pots drink gallons of water.. plastic ones are better in that way..
@JessicaS LEH does not disappoint.. not sure about disease resistance.. but fragrance and blooms are just amazing.. share the habit of hanging stems like the fellow austins.. I dont mind it as they are in pots.. I am so happy I got munstead and LEH.. both are happily blooming away.. doesn't ball in rain (occasional summer rains) for me.. but gets top heavy and might need support..
@cooldoc Fab thank you! LEH is Definitely on my list for the bare root season once back in stock at Austin, Nollie kindly compared to LOS for me which I also have and they are nicely different enough that both will be lovely. Great to hear it dosent ball - I noticed Shallot dosent either. My Albertine horrendously balls and it drives me potty! I adore Munstead as well, but chatting to others on here it looks like it would be too unruly for a pot or in border at mine, so I have opted for a Highgrove climbing red instead to appease myself after swooning at all the reds on here!
@cooldoc, my view is it’s your rose so call it the name you like best. I have started to call Purple Lodge by it’s other name Palais Biron as I prefer it and think it deserves a grander name. Great to see your Mutabilis doing well (and Marlorena’s), a bit miffed mine died on me 😞
@JessicaS, Lady Em does ball a little for me, but only during really heavy downpours. I think the gorgeous maroon foliage, flower-power and fragrance outweighs that though. Gets cercospora a little here, but just grows through it. No rose is perfect here, even Julia Child (Ab Fab) gets blackspot, so If I held out for perfection I wouldn’t have any roses!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Nollie I dont mind a bit of balling - Albertine however goes like tissue paper and sticks to all the unopened buds and ruins them Im definitely sold on Lady Emma, benefits way outway any flaws so I'll order it once its available, It'll be gorgeous in a pot wafting scent!
Mixed performances so far on my entry into the world of roses. The under performers for me are: Silas M, but he is now finaly starting to open up, but is lacking vigour, Maid Marion is starting to grow at last, but it's tiny buds are only in their infancy. A few roses have been storming ahead, they are pictured below:
Munstead wood, photo doesn't do its colour justice, then POAK, I'm not taken with its initial colour, but hoping it improves, then the mayflower, I go hot and cold on this one, but in a phase of liking it, final shot is Darcey B, which I like a lot, with Eglantine and Gertrude in the background.
