Don't forget people are bigger too now.Β Just imagine trying to fit the mythical average family of 4 today in a 60s mini or an old A40?Β We're taller and often broader and rounder now and we all have so much more stuff to carry.
We lost a Zafira after a lorry pranged it and bought a smaller 5 door car but if we want to take the dogs out with us we have to put a back seat down and it certainly doesn't have the capacity for carrying fence posts and big bags of compost about and even the weekly shop can be a squeeze in its boot.
I passed my driving test in one of those old, true minis. I was and still am 6'5" tall. Even today there's not many around bigger. You just drive what you have.Β If there were no big SUVs then the people today would just be in the cars available. The need isn't really there.
A lot of SUVs aren't 4 wheel drive but 2 wheel drive. It's marketing image and totally unnecessary anywhere.
Right now there's car makes stopping production of perfectly good cars because not enough people want them,Β preferring SUVs. The SUVs people are buying were based on the platform developed for the cars. It's basically an oversized body kit on normal carsΒ with a few raised ground clearance SUVs.Β Which of course makes them handle poorly compared with the cat's they're developed from.
We went on holidays to Devon in the 1970'sΒ in a Mini, two adults and two kids and all our gear for two weeks, how on earth we managed that I will never know!
In the early 60's we travelled from Gloucester to the bottom end of Cornwall in a Moggy Minor.Β 2 adults, 2 teenage kids, 1 cocker spaniel and all the requirements for a week self-catering.Β We were in the back with suitcases on our laps.Β It took all day to get there in the pre-motorway days.Β
This is starting to look like something from a Monty Python sketch.
Back in my day we did John's End to Land O'Sgroats on a single roller-skate. Four generations of family and our Great Dane. It took six weeks there and seven back and rained every day but we were grateful for it.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
@NorthernJoe, exactly the point I was making.Β The old joke about the most off road they do being the super market car park is so true.Β Don't start me about the school run,Β when I went to school barely a handful of children out of 500 , were brought by car. One of my best friends lived the other side of the borough & he came by bus, and then walked over 1/2 a mileΒ as the school wasn't on a bus route.Β Β
I can beat that! My dad had an old Standard, we went from Wiltshire to the top of Scotland with two adults, two children and old ex-Army camping gear for 2 weeks holiday. Later years, after 2 more children, we acquired a tiny caravan, went from Wiltshire to Abingdon to meet up with grandparents who came with us in their car and then up the old A1 to the Highlands (my dad liked to get away as far as possible from other people - I hated it). Took us 3-4 days just to get up there and the same back down. Usually on my birthday as soon as schools closed and it was always cold and wet. (or so it seemed)Β

We got a bus pass to school as we were over 2 miles, butΒ our next door neighbour didn't. After 2 years they remeasured and we stopped getting it. so we walked.Β
I ordered something from Amazon which was delivered a lot sooner than necessary. (Give your workers a break! Nobody needs it tomorrow!)Β Anyway, that's not my point. What I ordered was exactly what I wanted but it had a slight dent. The kind of thing you wouldn't notice after you'd stopped looking. My mum would send it back but I would say bgggggr it,Β I can't be bothered. When you buy something online, before you open the package, do you get that creepy feeling that someone has been there before you.?You have not been delivered of a virgin. What do you do?
I'm fed up with the internet! It's supposed to be the repository of all human knowledge these days but try as I might I cannot find anywhere that imparts the simple knowledge of what men's safety workbook is best in terms of price, performance, fitting narrow feet and selling in UK. I've found plenty of reviews of work boots in the UK but they don't all have safety ratings or mention the fit. Jerry pretty much any other type of boot reviews describe fit. Or they're advertising best prices in dollars and there's loads of USA specific brands unavailable from UK companies.
It's for with work and we need en standard safety boots, higher rating the better. I don't have much budget for them so anything over a set value I pay for. Every safety boot I've used had needed so many innersoles in just to adjust for the wide fit. Not all workers have very wide feet!!
It's annoying because of all the rubbish going around on the internet the useful stuff can simply be so poor.
