    Sorry to come back with another question:3 of the (too many) bare roots I bought were Darcey Bussell. Almost all of my other bare roots are in leaf, or have clear buds, except for these.  Of the 3, one looks green and now has a bud, one is half green and  half brown still no buds and the one in the pic is totaly brown and to my non expert eye appeared dead. I was just about to email DA to nicely complain, when this big red thing shown in the pic shot out of the ground. Is this normal, is it making a come back or do you think I should still  ask for a replacement.? Tia. (I should add it has been watered even if it looks dry in this pic, still waiting for my mulch to arrive, one month after ordering it, but that's another story re the previously reliable Mr muck)

    @Rickyjones24 50 roses!! I can only wish for so many... regarding the pic above can you see where the growth is coming from?

    Loving pic here @edhelka you might be among the first one to have blooms in UK. I must say that my heart skipped a beat seeing my first buds, hoping they all come good even though most are only few months old.. so not expecting much in 1st year.

    No rain here yet, might be a trickle even if there is some.

    @newbie77 do not worry.. things will brighten up for sure. Gardening helps for sure so try to divert your attention to that.

    @Rickyjones24

    Severe dieback - if you look where I’ve circled in green, that looks like a bud that could still grow, but you need to cut it where I’ve marked yellow.

    The rest of it needs each cane checking for signs of life but it looks like it needs almost cutting to the ground. It’s clearly not completely dead though.

    DA would replace this, I had similar dieback, although not quite as extreme, with my Lady Emma Hamilton last year. I was left with only 2 canes down from 6. But they replaced it no fuss.

  •  Cheers Mr vine eye, if da do replace it, would they send it on the next bare root season? Seems unfair somehow I'd be left with a gap for a year, do they let you pay the diffrence to get a potted rose now?

    If you get on it straight away they might squeeze it in before the end of April. Mine was well after the window so they sent it in November.

    You could always ask in your email. 🙂

  • Lots of things to consider but thank you for your input @Marlorena @edhelka and everyone else.  I certainly wouldn't be looking to do a formal bed, maybe 3 or 4 of my smallest roses with perennials.  Having had to look at a chicken coop there for the last 5 years I'd like something nicer to look at.  There's also not a lot of options for beds.  Top shaded, right has a row of old tree stumps, left is the current chicken coop, a couple of shrubs and our old owl mews and to the front I have a few plants the biggest being the rhododendron.  If we had a lovely flat lawn I may be more inclined to leave it.

    As far as what the neighbours think.....couldn't be further from my mind.  I get on with all of them anyway.

    @owd potter that's a very good idea.  I think we need to work out first how much of a gradient there is so we know what we're working with.  Like Mr V our lawn is lots of lumps bumps and slopes in all directions.

    Thank you for the photos @Yviestevie it looks stunning.  I actually did a search for it and yours came up.  That was enough to push me to placing an order.  Just waiting for it to arrive now.  Do you have 1 either side or 2 on one side?

    @newbie77 I really hope things improve for you.  When things are going bad for me a good dig in the garden is like a tonic.

    I have a light shower going on at the moment.. I feel like standing out there just to feel it..

    ...I'm sure it'll look lovely when finished.. I'm looking forward to seeing your new bed with roses and perennials, it'll be nice for you and us to look at.. exciting project..

    @Tack
    I have Nerines and been looking at those Amarines too..  lucky you !... I ought to try some..

    @Rickyjones24
    ..yeah, as Mr VE has pointed out.. those canes are dead almost to the graft but just a little bit of life left there..  DA have a 5 year guarantee,.. usually no quibble from my experience..  I have been sent potted versions of the bare roots at no extra expense in the past.. that was 4 years ago mind..

    @poppyfield64 I have one each side.  Originally I had a wooden arch, but after about 5 years it snapped in a very strong storm.  I have since bought a much stronger metal arch which will, hopefully, last a lot longer.
