Hostafan, we had something similar before we changed our oil boiler for gas. It was very handy to check when we were getting low on fuel.
we got gas run to the house and replaced the oil boiler as it was a huge floor standing thing that sounded like Concorde taking off when it started up.
Our house sounds like yours, in that it is a sprawling bungalow with rooms having lots of outside walls. We used to have some potential problems with damp in the corners. We found that leaving the heat on lower for 24 hours in the winter, rather than having it going off and on through the day and night, meant that the walls warmed up and dried out, and we used less energy overall. Our bills actually went down and we are a lot more comfortable. Worth thinking about if you can afford to experiment.

    Evening.

Sorry to hear that SIL had a bad experience @Yviestevie - what concerns me there is nobody had checked on him for a while if he slept like that all night. I hope he improves swiftly so he can get back home.

Thoughts to your family @Allotment Boy

We have an old, cold house and we have moved bedrooms this winter - worked a treat.

Snow is 50:50 for us tonight - I’ve done a Plan B and Plan C for my work team tomorrow, so hopefully they won’t message me at 0530 to ask me what to do.

We have gas works planned for Wednesday, so good that I am home that day to let them in to ‘fiddle’ with the meter but not looking forward to no heating all day. Could de-camp to the bathroom suppose as electric under floor heating there. Electric blower and two jumpers otherwise.

    Take care all.

  • Bear in mind that @Hostafan1 has told us he suffers with Raynauds so needs to keep extra warm.  Unfortunately every extra degree C costs.  Our hall thermostat is set at 18-19, that gives a living room temperature of 22 ish plenty for us, but not for others I'm sure. In winter we keep internal doors closed as much as possible,  open plan living can be draughty, and expensive.

    AB Still learning

  • That’s the same temps as us @Allotment Boy .... large rooms but pretty well insulated .... and I’ve usually got a piece of warm woolly knitting on my lap in the evenings 😆

You're all going to have to get heat pumps to replace all the fossil fuel boilers of course  :)

Just had a look at the oil measuring device that @Hostafan1 was thinking about. Looks a handy bit of kit. I used to use a bamboo cane and a tape measure.

Nope.  The French govt is offering a deal to all home owners who replace their oil fired CH boilers with heat exchange pumps.  We're looking into it.  Already have one for heating the main water tank.

SIL is home, the doctor said he could go home but it was too late to get his medicines from the pharmacy.  SIL said he would go home and collect the prescription in the morning.  His breathing is better than it was.  He is still coughing but hopefully the medication will continue to help.
