Good question, but I don't think thing in general are approximately 80 times more expensive than in the late 50's. I could be wrong and I suspect somebody will be along to prove that. A definite exception would be house prices but exclude those.

Just done my own quick check and £1 back in the late 50's would be about £26 now. So 6d would be a bit over a quid. Giving £2 for a tooth is just ramping up the inflation rate.
Wait a minute (and I just checked too). 6d = 2.5p. Since, according to the Bank of England, prices have risen just shy of 25 fold since 1957, 2.5 x 24.7 = 62p. No wonder the country’s going to the dogs.
I remember discreetly advising parents who were discussing with their children how much the tooth fairy might bring, that there were 20 baby teeth in total to be lost! Came as a bit of a shock to some, and the expected remuneration went down pretty quickly!

Inflation has gone mad. I only got 6d per tooth!
