  • Gosh @Pat E cold! Morning everybody -- slow ( and cold ) start this morning . Glad we made the most of the sun by going for a longer walk ( relative -- still only an hour )  yesterday , feel like will be dodging showers all day today . No sign of my seeds or roses yet -- so I envy those that have had their deliveries and can plan! I think Jan birthdays are nice -- it's something to look fwd to through the coldest of the weather!
@Balgay.Hill -- I think we have all been there ( in terms of online comments being interpreted differently than we intended or being written in haste repented at leisure  etc ) -- always harder I think to judge nuance and tone in writing than in 'person'. Take care of yourselves all, and @Allotment Boy wishing you and your family all the best. I'm going to try  figure out  how I go about getting a bit of an allotment ( don't seem to be any in my council ) or  if can volunteer and learn from more experienced folks at community gardens or the royal parks or something.

    Morning all.
Rain woke me at 5am, hard to get back to sleep, then I overslept.

@Biglad, so annoying when that happens. Delivery drivers can never find my house, down a track in the middle of a forest. When ordering online there is usually a space for typing instructions but the instruction never get passed to the drivers. I hope the house I'm moving to will be easier.

    Hello @Balgay.Hill

Son 2 asked me to lunch today, I had to say no as France is still in lockdown. Think he forgot as he's a dentist and dentists are open so lockdown can't be so different for him. I hope we are released on the 15th as OH is due home on the 18th, will be 3 months since I saw him. Daughter 1 has asked us to share Christmas with them. Should have been our turn to have the family but I can't when I'm about to move house and my children will have taken the contents of their old bedrooms.

Hello everyone.  Wall to wall sunshine here which is such a shame - not.  I'd planned to clean windows but will just have to play at something else instead.

Like @Fairygirl I enjoy winter and just change the focus of my activities to suit the weather and light.   I used to find cold, dark February harder than January as Possum's birthday is in January, the Belgian dance club's annual ball was usually at the end of Jan and the days are starting to get just a teeny bit longer.   Now I just enjoy the whole process come rain or shine.

Fingers crossed for OH getting home @Busy-Lizzie .  I suspect you'd have ben OK going to lunch at son 2's.  I have yet to see any controls here and you could put down family urgency on that form.

Bonzo dog is on fine form today.  It's going to be hard keeping him calm as Rasta is also full of beans and feeling playful.  Like having a pair of toddlers about.

Hugs to all who need them.   Stay safe.

Hello everyone, including @Balgay.Hill - welcome to the forum.
I have to admit we've only just got up, didn't sleep well last night as bones ached so had a lie-in and breakfast in bed. It was sunshiny earlier but has now clouded over and only 3 c out there so not keen to venture outside, although there's still more leaf clearing to be done. Daughter's cat was very vocal about not getting his breakfast at the usual time so had to hop out of bed and feed him quickly. He's enjoying sitting on our windowsills watching the birds and squirrels in particular seem to fascinate him but shows hardly any interest in wanting to go outside. We have tried with him in a harness in the back garden but he's not keen. Surprising really as he's used to roaming over Dartmoor.

Afternoon folks,  Have had a busy morning baking banana cakes and stew for Secondborn's freezer.  I'm going to write my Christmas cards this afternoon and watch a film, something Christmassy maybe.
I really dislike January, I find it really depressing.  Cold, dark and long.  February is better because the bulbs start to open.  My favourite month is May, summer just round the corner and garden always looks lovely.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone.

Gosh, just seen a big fox appear on the terrace, not 3 ft away from me! A bit mangy looking, obviously after food - hope he doesn't come back and try to get at the bait in the rat traps. We think he's tried that before as they've ended up way down in the flower bed.

  • @Desi_in_London you could try going to your local Allotment site & asking if anyone wants a helping hand,  or wants to share,  this can sometimes be a shortcut to getting a plot. What part of London are you in ? Capel manor in N London takes volunteers.  Other public gardens do the same.
@Yviestevie May &June are my favourite months for the same reasons just happen to have my Birthday in January. 😁

  • @Allotment Boy thank you for that -- I'm in sort-of-central London with no access to a car and I think the location is part of the problem-- perhaps I need to enquire into some local church gardens and so on as well as the parks.  I currently have a dodgy immune system so it's really something to explore in the next few months at the earliest but thought I'd try and do my homework beforehand. Capel Manor sounds great but is probably too far a commute-- my parents live in  the ( south) suburbs and in the new year I'm going to see if I can try find a volunteer opportunity somewhere nearer them to combine with visiting--especially if it gives them an "outing" in fine weather.
