I wanted a large tree pruned. As the main priority was the look and health of the tree, I had quite a few estimates before making up my mind. The ones I discounted immediately were the chancers who discussed the job in percentages to be removed.

  • Don’t get that @B3 ... it’s good practice not to remove more than 30% of the top growth of a tree unless the intention is to pollard it ... removing more than 30% can trigger a lot of regrowth/water shoots.

Could that have been the reason for talking in percentages or have I misunderstood you ?

@Fairygirl we get them too often, my*rse is also good at spotting them.
@B3 We try to stick with one good one. But they seem hard to keep hold of no matter how much tea and cake you supply. They are also often busy for months on end.

They were talking in percentages as they were the types who just happen to have a bit of tarmac left over and would I like my drive done really cheap.
I get the tree done about every four years. The chap I've used a couple of times is getting on a bit so I hope he's still knocking about next time I get around to having it done

We had a chap speculatively knock on the door about three years ago asking if we wanted the Perspex roof on our 25 year old conservatory replaced with a solid roof. I must admit I hadn’t thought about this but there was a minor leak and the too cold in winter/too hot in summer aspect was rankling me.

He talked through the options, gave us a price and promised to call back in a week once we had mulled it over. We accepted the quote and it was one of the best decisions we have ever made. Not all cold callers are the devil incarnate.

They are masked.  They are keeping their distance.  Some people find a royal visit lifts the spirits.

Don't understand it myself but at least they're trying and a thank you may be all some of these key workers get.

A minor gripe but I had to buy my bird food elsewhere this time and as a bloke I'd just rather not have to have a box come through the post with "Little Peckers" written all over it. :|

Personally a couple of Royals turning up in their train - not any old dire train service but the ‘Royal’ train - wouldn’t do an awful lot to cheer me up. But then, I’d probably not be one of the specially selected chosen to meet them.

I admit it. My name is Helios and I’m a miserable old bag.

So do I @Songbird-1 and it has clearly gone down well with most of the people who saw them.   Doesn't need much to cheer people up if they're experiencing exhaustion or miserable times.

The cynic in me also thinks it's good PR by a family that has an eye to its long term future.

@Susinka. I'm not sure what you're referring to but we don't indulge in personal insults on this esteemed thread. Behave or move on😊
