Evening all, Very hot here today.  Had a delivery of plants from Beth Chatto and I have potted on or planted most of them.  Have given the front garden a good watering but the pots at the back will have to wait until the sun has gone down.  Haven't done much else today except sit in the shade and read.  Stay cool and safe everyone.

  • The island is a place you love or hate! When I was still searching for THE island, I was chatting to three young German ladies who worked in Dublin, in a layby overlooking Blasket Isle . They were so enthusiastic ( a fascinating history but closed now) until I said I would love to LIVE there! SHOCK! HORROR! Many come seeking the peace here but would never live here. And there are no officials out here! We get a doctor visit every three weeks unless urgent, and if emergency . as happened to me recently, the Air Ambulance is swiftly here. What more do  we need? It is as they say a perfect fit. And of course the internet makes a huge difference. I cannot imagine life without this.

Stay cool ! There is a delicious breeze now.

Oh I put the photo of the burgeoning flowerbed with its story on my weblog .. islandanchorhold.blogspot.com

Island, I think that your climate would suits me very well. Summers can be really brutal here. Sorry to hear that your delivery is also postponed.

Yvie, I'm glad that you had a nice time in the garden.

Good evening . Thank you for your good wishes friends . We have only done necessary jobs today .
Most of the day we have been reading .  The temperature has been hotter than I ever remember .
Unfortunately we have a sharp rise of Covid in Leeds. Going out at the moment is not really wise if anyone has been .
self-isolating .Island I hope that you are feeling better soon . Ante sorry to hear that you have been unwell too .Please look after yourselves in this heat  everyone .
  • Thanks, and patience is an essential virtue living here! In bad weather we are cut off for days at a time. And have three postal deliveries a week or occasionally four if weather allows. . The winter gales are...Not for the fainthearted. Straight off the Atlantic and often the remnants of hurricanes reach us. Incredible noise.

I would melt where you are but I imagine your houses are built to combat that?  Hope so! The traditional Irish cottages have walls three feet thick so are well equipped for all weathers.

    Stay cool!

Hello again all. It has not been too hot here at all today - overcast most of the time. The thing is, the top half of my house gets very hot so sleeping might be difficult tonight. Ruby, I hope that you and you OH get a better rest tonight. It must leave you feeling very worn out through the day. Chive I hope that the eye clinic sorts out the pressure in your Mum's eye. Rosie, I think Lily has been very hot today. She is making progress though. I am sorry to hear that you weren't feeling well yesterday Ante. I hope that you get your delivery OK and that you can get to the cottage this weekend. It will be nice to check on your veggies. How are the fruit trees doing? It must be hard keeping them watered. Island, it must be very refreshing - on warm days - to get a lovely sea breeze from the Atlantic. How are you doing Yvie? What are the plants you got from Beth Chatto's? Are you pleased with them all?

I'm OK LB. Still anxious, thank God for the garden.  The plants delivered were
Eucomis Sparkling Burgundy - potted up two of these, they are tender so will need to be kept frost free over winter.
    Astrantia Star of Beauty
    Butomus umbellatus for the pond
    Lobelia Compton Pink
Lythrum salicarea Blush. This was a bit of an impulse buy and I'm finding it a bit tricky to find a suitable spot for it.
Well packed and arrived in good condition.  I need to go and get an aquatic basket for the Butomus, hopefully I'll pick one up tomorrow.
