@Fire Thank you. Yeah.. the potential issue with my balcony’s weight bearing load has crossed my mind multiple times and also being kindly pointed out by fellow members here. I have done my own calculations and it seemed alright but I think I ought to get a proper assessment by a structural engineer once lockdown is lifted. I I haven’t bought any more roses this year partly because of that.
I do take steps though to decrease the weight of my plants - using lightweight synthetic pots instead of terracotta ones, perlite instead of grit to aid drainage and I placed the pots around the perimeter of the balcony to distribute the weight more evenly. 🤞
I've been creating quite a bit more room recently, and I've got enough room now to think about adding a Rugosa to my wish list and "Roseraie de l'Hay" in particular has caught my eye. Has anyone grown it, and are they trouble free enough not to be a nightmare.
@peteS my Ros. de l'Hay is in it's 3rd season, smells divine as you walk passed it, thorny as hell.......lovely lax branching, large flowers, will flower from now to October. Marolena recommended it needs no feeding/pruning unless to tidy it up. I would recommend it... Mine is planted just inside my front garden gate, trouble free, generally pest free aside from the usual aphids but doesn't become covered in them, can't remember it getting black spot, would like to say the same for my other roses........
The first bloom on Lovestruck, planted bare root in early March. The colour hasn't come true in the photo, its the deep red that the roses are that they sell for Valentines. So far it is healthy and doing well, I think I maybe lovestruck!
Received a shipment from David Austin roses today, turns out I thought I was ordering Emily Bronte but received Anne Boleyn instead! Must have gotten my historical and literary figures mixed up lol My fault, wasn't paying attention when I placed the order I guess. So I've done what any self-respecting, rose-obsessed person would do, I've gone and re-ordered Emily Bronte and now I've got two roses instead of one. whoops
I'm never disappointed by Rosa 'Hyde Park', every year it flowers well, the scent is lovely and it's so vigorous. When it's too big I just prune it back and it flowers again.
Welcome from me too @Tack, do post some more photos, we love to see them!
@Mr. Vine Eye your purples look stunning in the evening light. I am of the opinion you can’t have too many purples! It’s my go-to colour to complement everything and useful for separating out clashing colours.
I too have been watching my new bareroot roses playing turn and turn about. Bonica and Astronomia bombed away in growth and bloom but since then, nothing. Stormy Weather and Diamond Eyes have been consistent in growth and bloom, Burgundy Ice has very weak growth but good blooms. Rose de Molinard is extremely slow in growth, but has, on it’s tiny dwarf bush, given me some spectacular scented blooms. Soul has grown extremely vigorously but I am still waiting for the first bloom - that would be like waiting until July in the UK! Following the rain deluge last night, those newbies that came off worst and are totally flattened are Burgundy Ice and recently planted potted rose Princess Alexandra of Kent.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.

What's it like for vigour and black spot? And is there a scent to it?
