@Lizzie27 I’m a great fan of RW’s red foliage too! Plus it’s grown so tall this year for me that I would be able to enjoy the blooms and scent at almost standing height this year.. can’t wait!
@Aero84 I have 'Simple Peach', bought this year from Harkness, together with 'Simple Gold' and 'Chandos Beauty'. All are still in pots. 'Simple Gold' is in bud and the most advanced, must be close to flowering. My garden has a north aspect, so most things are a bit later. Not sure how far along SP is, must check tomorrow.
@Lizzie27, your roses are coming along really well. Royal William does look good, lovely foliage. It’s the upright, stiff habit I don’t like with HTs, not the blooms. I guess they might work for me at the back of a border where I don’t have to see the legs! In fact, RD Braithwaite is under review at the moment, even though it’s one of my favourites because it’s a good red that holds it’s colour well. It was fabulous the first year, but since then the bloom power seems to have gradually decreased and it does blackspot badly. If it languishes this year, maybe I should consider replacing with RW or something similar.
@Mary370, yes Warm Welcome wouldn’t appeal to everyone, but it works really well in my hot border and flowers from top to bottom all summer long, unlike many of the rest that take a break in July/August.
Continuing with the hogging then...
The Prince with morning dew. It’s meant to have a strong old rose fragrance, but nothing much yet. OH says it smells faintly of pee!
Bonica, for a new bare root rose, is smothered in blooms already:
Susan Williams-Ellis:
I have incorporated SWE into my new rose border. She was in a pot and rather than disturb her by replanting her, I have sunk the pot into the ground as a temporary measure. The blooms do nod a lot:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@micearguers i bought mine this year too so it is still in its pot. I’ll be interested to see if it does reach the size it claims to, and a bit disappointed if it doesn’t. The flowers looked really pretty from the photo. It was hard to find a photo of the full plant to get a visual idea of size. I’ll be interested to see how yours comes along.
Lovely roses @Nollie. I agree with you about the stiff erect 'legs' but sometimes that it is an advantage because it doesn't need so much space and can grow at the back of the border. I prune my RW down to about a foot in late winter, it's about 3 ft now and will reach 5-6ft by autumn. I do wish I hadn't put the obelisk over it, makes it difficult to prune and pick up dead leaves. It's quite a heavy, substantial one so I couldn't move it now even if I wanted to! Like that very pale blush prink @valerieroberts.
Hmm, you might be persuading me, @Lizzie27 as a replacement for LD Braithwaite (helps if I get the initials right too, I mistakenly called it RDB right at the beginning and it’s irritatingly stuck). LDB has never reached the stated height and that spot needs it. We’ll see...
@Mr. Vine Eye, I was rather hoping a tom cat had sprayed against the pot rather than the rose actually smelling of pee, but OH insists she is right!
And another one, Golden Celebration, with the first of Lady Emma Hamilton to the left:
Close-up of Golden Celebration, looking a bit too peachy for my taste, but still lovely:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
All lovely roses everybody and garden too @Lizzie27 … Royal William looks as though it wants to be a climber, looking at Adrian's picture too... lots of thorny vigour going on there..
@Nollie ..I wouldn't have guessed that was 'GC'... I don't think I've seen it that colour before.. your roses still look so healthy.. I sometimes bury a pot too but I have awful difficulty retrieving it later.. and that looks a heavy one... I hope my Susan W-E looks as nice as yours though..
