@Fire What a lovely and very unusual bouquet that will be. I've only got one small white bloom left on my Winchester Cathedral rose.

Browsing at the local nursery (as you do...) the other day, I picked up a new (and very cheap) rose....called Temple Bells, white single flowers, described as a miniature climber/groundcover rose, but can't find any further info on it like whether it flowers once or repeatedly, or how rampant it is. I've just planted it in a pot on the patio and hoping for the best. Anyone know it?
  • I’ve decided not to plant any roses at my allotment plot as I reckon there isn’t enough space.. since I’m sharing it with another person. That said I have planted bare root Euatacia Vye, Gabriel Oak and Tottering by Gently in pots this year.. I cannot quite remember what Eustacia Vye and Gabriel Oak smelled like when I visited DA garden last year.. but they are rated as ‘strong’ - and supposedly suitable for windy and exposed areas.

@m@"Mr. Vine Eye" It’s so nice to see your Malvern Hills taking off so well this year.. you’ll have an entire wall full of blooms in 2021! I haven’t had as much luck with my climbers in pots - even if the pots are huge. My Etoile de Hollande did not do much in its first year and only started to pick up towards the end of season this year.. the problem is partly due to the amount of wind it’s exposed to I suppose.. when it does throw up a strong cane the growing tip inevitably gets dessicated in the wind and that’s that..

On the other hand, my Claire Austin just isn’t behaving like a climber at all.. in fact I’m convinced they sent me a ?shrub version (if that exists ) - it just does not produce any trainable canes at all and in fact just throws up lots of thin ones that flower very quickly and show no interest in climbing. I’ve had to dig it up last week because it was getting waterlogged in its pot - I have to think about either planting it elsewhere or just repot it in the same container.. it’s been a poor performer for the last two years. Maybe a period in the ground at my allotment plot might do if some good?

..if you check out this link, it will tell you all about 'Temple Bells'..  look on 'member comments' and you will see reports from various people around the world who grow it.. take notice of those from Charles Valin as he's in the UK.. the others are not..  apparently it gets crown gall... Mr Valin is a plant breeder for Thompson and Morgan..
