..thanks.. it was a good size garden, behind me were apple and pear trees, greenhouse, shed and small veg plot... that house was semi in north Kent/London suburb, cost £46,000 at the time... which was a lot for us then... those conifers on the right were a pain to cut but they blocked out high windows..
Also, just to add, if anybody remembers the 'Hurricane' of 1987, those conifers were uprooted and all my rustic arches were blown down, everything got demolished.. I remember going outside late at night and watching it all happen.. there was nothing I could do but hold on for dear life ..lol..
@Marlorena Oh gosh it is beautiful, happy memories! I do keep thinking I should pick it up. My gardens very rose heavy now which I love - ive really worked at the awful soil and its getting much better. I found some right rubbish, old pipes, a coke bottle (the huge ones not the individual ones!), broken pots, plastic... plus lots of rocks. The areas soil is apparently really good, its just all the rubble, so lots of digging and rain and a lot of fertiliser! Basset Hounds can be quite lazy, Big dogs on short legs - Cheeky but prone to be lazy, hubby and I walk them together - I have to fence the borders off or put tunnels through though or they make their own! They like to be involved. They steal all my apples too. We have bassets aged 4, 5, 5, 10 and 12 so a real mix, but they dont "feel" like 5 dogs!
Heres mine when we first moved in! One year on left corner Right corner
Early June Last year! Lawn is wrecked dogs plus really hot
Its changed already, I am having a raised bed with a pergola top built just this minute to go under and support the wisteria (and give me a new veggie bed!) and I have extended all the beds bigger. Its getting patioed and gravelled at the end of Feb and I cant wait.
^they look good Nollie, nothing wrong with any of those... lots of canes to work with..
@JessicaS ..you've done so well, looking at the first picture it's soul destroying to find all that rubbish underneath... but lots of interesting plants going on, and when the landscaping is finished it'll look great... can't wait to see photos in Spring.. I did laugh at your dogs eating the apples... they sound like quite a fun bunch of happy dogs..
I think between those two @Mr. Vine Eye I would go for a stronger apricot/orange - I love my Warm Welcome, or a contrasting purple - I think @edhelka has purple skyliner? That might look good, or a deeper colour like my current obsession, Stormy Weather, which has really lovely foliage.
@Marlorena, yes I’m pleased with them. Cramoisi is already in the ground, the Duchesse is potted up awaiting it’s raised bed and Noella is going in the ground tomorrow. I need to dig out all the old soil for her as this will be my fourth attempt at growing a climbing red in that position!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
I can't remember if I've asked this question before or not...but is it OK to tip old compost out from a pot which once contained a rose on top of the soil and still avoid any replant problems for new roses going in.

My latest order from Loubert in France arrived today, L-R Cramoisi Superieur, Noella Nabonnand and Duchess d’Auerstadt:

I don’t think it’s the right colour though as it would be right by Vanessa Bell and Kew Gardens - so all pale yellow colours.
I’d need something either a much stronger yellow/apricot - like Graham Thomas or maybe white. Otherwise I’d get it.
Also scent isn’t important for that one at the back - I want to not have temptation across the border to stomp clumsily across to go in for a sniff 😄
That’s why I’ve moved some of mine, they were too far back and tricky to reach.
So the one in the back corner could be scentless. But would be nice if it had attractive foliage.
