@Mr. Vine Eye You may have to avert thine eyes whenever my three red HTs bloom 😜

@Marlorena That’s a wonderful dissection of the David Austin story and their marketing success! I smiled a bit at the point you made regarding how the naming of roses is so important. imagine growing a rose called Ch-Ching... I wouldn’t even dare to post it on a forum if I had one ha! (Even if it actually looks quite beautiful when I googled it)

DA posted snippets of their garden two days ago and I was surprised at how ‘behind’ their roses are currently - with only new shoots growing mostly let alone buds.. I tried to post a screenshot for everyone’s convenience but the file size was too large and I don’t know how to shrink it so here’s the direct link:

I don’t use FB so thanks for sharing, interesting to see how much they prune theirs.

@Fire it’s the stiff, upright habit thing for me and hybrid teas and I don’t know how to incorporate them into my sort of cottage style mixed borders. Whether thats the softer, more romantic borders I am developing in the front (east) garden or the explosion of colour I keep trying to get in the sunnier back (west) border, where hot colours work better.

I would consider a climbing HT and nearly bought Etoile du Holande, but got The Prince’s Trust instead. First bloom is close to opening, can’t wait to see it.

    Guinee sounds delicious!

..the more I see of your 'Stormy Weather' the more I like it, I must say..
@celcius_kkw ..yes I noticed that too... I look at their Instagram pages quite often.. I also follow their Head Gardener around so always see what he's up to... sometimes I don't always agree with what he does... but that's ok.. who am I to argue..?.

@Mr. Vine Eye  ..gosh thank you...I'm glad I've influenced somebody in life.. by the way my GdeF has lots of buds... have another look at yours, I'm surprised it's not budding out yet?...
@jonathanmichell23 Jonathan... please tell us the 4 roses you got that are not DA's... I'm always interested to hear of people's choices of roses...
@Omori  I'm so glad you mentioned 'Sombreuil'... as you will know it has one drawback, it's rather on the thorny side.. is that right? I've not grown it myself..  it should really be called 'Colonial White'... because it just gets confused with another rose.. but that's how it goes..
I know what you mean about those DA's, but I just thought it might be nice to get a surprise.. not quite knowing what's in the package.. so to speak... oh dear, that might not read well..

@Fire  I hope you'll show photos of your 'Niphetos'[??] once again...

Can I just say, regarding giving advice, and I've been meaning to say this, but please don't hold back or feel intimidated in any way, if you see another thread on roses, I'm always delighted if others jump in there, even with i.d's or whatever... I try not to barge in, but I know I sometimes do... forgive for that... but I try not to poke my oar in so to speak all the time... so please do offer advice...
I don't always see threads outside of the 'Plants' section in any case... and as for i'd's.. I do get tagged a lot, but I'm not really doing these much now because I'm sorry to say that, one doesn't always get thanked for it.. not even a 'like' ... of course if it's somebody I sort of 'know' then it's different, but sometimes I can spend over an hour on it, and I like to be reasonably sure.. and then you find they never get back to you... it becomes a thankless task..

Please help out there if you can... you're more than welcome... just don't expect to be thanked for it unfortunately..
...and besides, I don't know them all, nobody does.. and it's easy to get it wrong..

    @Marlorena 😆

Yes Sombreuil is thorny as I recall, I don’t mind a thorny rose as long as it isn’t along a path etc.

I’ve done my morning round of rose inspection today. At the moment my Munstead Wood and Boscobel are almost neck and neck in producing the first bloom on my balcony garden..

Here’s Munstead Wood - it’s just so exciting to check on her every day, doesn’t it looks like it’s so ready to unravel?

    And next up is Boscobel

But by far Desdemona and Roald Dhal have the most buds (over 20 on each of them last time I counted) I must say that I have been most impressed with Desdemona.. she performed so well last year and so far she’s also the most healthy and vigorous of all my DA roses.

I'm so pleased they are doing well for you Adrian, in your quite obvious expert care with potted roses..   you deserve this..
...I've got a fair bit of rust on one of my 'MW' roses this season, something I've not seen on this rose before now... but not something I'm going to worry about too much..
I'm awaiting my first Desdemona bloom...

Talking of potted roses, if you want some inspiration and have 10 minutes to spare, you might be interested in this youtube video from Shiuan's garden in Japan, from May last year... she is famous for growing all her roses in pots, on a balcony in what looks like some sort of high rise.. I gather the first floor is given over to a bar, and apartments are above that..

She grows many David Austin roses amongst a huge variety... all gorgeous and all in pots, some she's had for 15 years... it's truly amazing and quite frankly I don't know how she does it..
