I think between those two @Mr. Vine Eye I would go for a stronger apricot/orange - I love my Warm Welcome, or a contrasting purple - I think @edhelka has purple skyliner? That might look good, or a deeper colour like my current obsession, Stormy Weather, which has really lovely foliage.
I would say Purple Skyliner is too big and vigorous and it has flexible canes. It could work well on the wall. What about something like Westerland for a freestanding tall rose or maybe partially freestanding and partially trained?
@Marlorena Thank you so much! Yeah lots of hard work to even dig the beds. The hounds are lovable clowns! They are so funny with anything edible - they think they are giraffes with that tree! My new bed / pergola is finished - I haven't taken a daylight one yet but heres one I took mid build. It'll need painting with a wood stain then filling up! Im really pleased with it, just trying to imagine what its going to be like in summer! My wisteria is at the back and will be trained over it too, Im debating adding the beautiful climbing rose Checkmate (I caved and brought that on friday!) on the left against the fence to go left and over the top a bit too. The twiggy thing in that corner is my beloved snowball tree (viburnum opulus roseum) and Rhapsody in Blue next to the bed so they should tone nicely. I should add as well there are a LOT of spring bulbs in that corner! Its absolutely stuffed with deeply planted tulips in pinks, purples and whites, another obsession of mine, they always put on a good display and ive topped them up too.
I plan to put some seasonal vegetables like courgettes, tomatoes and peppers in the beds as its a suntrap in summer, with some companion planting like marigolds too, and some sweet peas with the beans up the sides. The right hand side bed I will make a bit wider, and some of the new roses are going in there with some low shrubs. Thats got Exochorda "the bride" in which is just stunning in spring. Its got some gorgeous hellebore in there for winter colour but needs more bits. Very exciting!
A portion of that corner in spring last year, should be even more in this year...
And a bonus "Helper" inspecting the pergola wood. He approved.
@JessicaS ...oh bless.. I absolutely love dogs, they're all my babies.. lol.. your one there is just totally adorable.. ... your pergola is going to look great... I'm not quite clear what's happening in the middle there, are you filling with soil like a raised bed?.. ...I've not heard of Checkmate rose, you caught me out with that one, so I had to look it up... very pretty rose, should attract lots of bees... ...and of course I love your choice of shrubs... the Snowball tree is a favourite, I like most Viburnums really, and the Exochorda too, although I don't have them here..
..look forward to seeing your bulb selection... I normally have quite a few Tulips but not this year unfortunately... If you know the names of your Tulips I should like to know, I have certain favourites...
..good luck with your veg... I can recommend the climbing French Bean 'Blauhilde', it's great with roses, as the pods are purple and the flowers are pink/white.. stringless and delicious.. 6-8 foot..
@Mr. Vine Eye ...let us know which roses you decide on, if you make up a shortlist... I don't recommend 'Lichfield Angel'... I don't think you will like it..
@Mr. Vine Eye I got mine from TCL, listed under it’s alternative name Princess Sibila de Luxembourg. Maybe not worth the postage for just one rose, although you could do what I do and treat that as a buying opportunity 😃 Are they still shipping to the UK tho? Anyone received orders from TCL post-Brexit?
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
This lovely thread / forum really brightens my day!
@Marlorena He is a proper rascal, they all are. We had 4, fostered for the basset rescue, but have just adopted the #5 we had as she had health issues and is happy here. Whats one more!
Pergola base will be filled with soil for raised beds so I can put veg and annuals in it. Im putting more of my new roses in along the side of it towards the shed as they seem to love that suntrap. There will be a wide spaced wrought iron look black fence to border it so I can see through but muddy paws cant trample everything, they are very very curious - otherwise they will just flatten the lot trying to explore, whether they fit or not! One very naughty rascal beheaded a load of tulips last year too, just because...
That bean sounds perfect, I'll order some, thank you. Checkmates very pretty isnt it? I hadnt heard of it before either but spotted it randomly, kept being drawn back to it, especially that its bee friendly and I need more open roses as a lot of mine are quite closed - I caved on Friday!
Tulips; that particular corner has Angelique, double flag, Dreamtouch (newly planted there, I adore them), I also have Queen of the night and a selection of wilkinson / morrisons double lates and singles (surprisingly good quality!). Must admit I have actually dug a big new bed in the front lawn this year and put over 300 bulbs in including a load of tulips! Off the top of my head that contains shirley double, flaming flag, Nachtwacht, Whispering Dream, Hemisphere, belica and some mixes - pic below of what I have somewhat madly planted out there this year, not including whats in the planters! I really hope it works and they come up. Im putting some of the new roses out afterwards, replacing some scratty shrubs the builders put in. Id love to know your favourites. I am a bit obsessed with names and like to learn them, so have tags on everything, anyone else do that?
I am a sucker for testing things visually, so heres the rough new garden landscape "plan" too - not very to scale but thats the gravel and stone plan round the beds, gives a rough idea!
@JessicaS ...oh wow, what can I say.. I wish I had your attention to detail like that, very impressive... love the collage of bulbs too... don't mind admitting that I've not heard of some of those, so will look forward to what will surely be a glorious display.. but I'd like to recommend 2 that are not on your list... if you ever see Narcissus 'Beauvallon' it's worth getting.. it's a Chelsea winner and suitable for windy areas, the stalks are thick and firm and do not succumb to gales easily... a beautiful daffodil... ..good to know that Morrisons and Wilkinsons supply good bulbs.. last year I got mine from Farmer Gracy in Netherlands but don't know if they still ship.. they were excellent bulbs.. ..I see what you mean now about the beds in the pergola base... will they get enough sun do you think?.. you wouldn't want the top to get covered with roses would you?..
..your Bassett's are clearly a right set of characters .. I bet they enjoy each others company too...

Yours looks great, but I can’t find it for sale anywhere here!
