Thank you @Marlorena I'll take a look for Beauvallon, not heard of it. Whats the other? I love the scent and beauty of narcissus. I use Farmer Gracy a lot for more unusual ones, they are still shipping to UK thankfully. Ive got some bits on order for summer too, great service and quality. I use JParkers as well for the bulk of my bulbs, but supermarket / wilcos are good for a few fillers, and the thompson and morgan sales
Yes, I was thinking that, I'll be careful not to cover too much of the pergola top, the wisteria is just at the back bit really and down the back, theres a little gap infront of the fence, and the rose I'll make sure I train that more left so it covers the fence rather than too much over pergola, but I thought it might be good to go up that corner beam a bit. That wisteria will have finished flowering before the veg goes in, and I'll keep the sweet peas etc and whatever else goes up there to the side and top beams and canes. Theres decent gaps between beams. Id only planned pergola over the top bit originally but I didnt communicate that properly so my friend that made it did one to cover the whole thing, oh well
This is 4/5 of my gardening assistants (proper photoshoot a few years ago, otherwise theyd never be looking in the same direction!)
@JessicaS ...they are so cute... I'd love to cuddle them all .. lol..
...yeah, you seem to have it worked out ok. for your pergola... can't wait to see how it all pans out with your garden there.. ...sorry I forgot the name of the Tulip, it's a lavender colour with a darker centre, and I have to search for the label, it gave such outstanding results last year, very long flowering.. if anyone recognises it please let me know.. I'm sure I got it off Farmer Gracy but I've checked their site and can't see it ...
I think one or two members have got roses from them recently, and I can agree their roses are superb quality... I only wish I had used them before.. they are the equal to Trevor White's and cheaper, only they don't have quite the inventory but nonetheless..
...huge roots, and good thick canes.. ..2 roses in each bag, wrapped in damp newspaper..
Queen of Denmark...Kathleen Harrop...Aimee Vibert... Mme Caroline Testout.. ..more from Secret Garden Club today... all very nice..
@JessicaS I love tulips. Do you replant every year? Flag tulips ('Flaming Flag' to be specific) wasn't perennial here at all, on the other side 'Queen of Night' is very reliable, coming back every year and even slowly multiplying. Many of them last quite well in my sandy soil but some don't so it's always waiting for spring to see what appears... sophisticated planting schemes are left for pots.
Oh Marlorena, what have you started? I was bored this afternoon when up popped the Secret Garden site so I too succumbed. 3 Helianthemums following your recommendations, 3 Gauras and something else I can't even remember now. Yesterday I bought a dinky bright red Haws watering can especially for seedlings/greenhouse (I only have a small one). It was a good job the promised Harrod Horticultural catalogue was not included as I would have probably spent a fortune!
@edhelka Me too, so many lovely types! I buy fresh for my patio planters every year as they are never as good the second year, and just top up the borders as I widen them etc - Its the first year ive tried the flag ones, but Queen of the night comes up reliably every year so far so has Angelique and the double lates. I always feed them in spring and let the foliage die back afterwards too. Front bed is new, but I planted them really deep so fingers crossed and excited to see what happens! I can see the very tips of a few of the narcissus here and there out the front.
I am impressed with your planning @JessicaS have you planting alliums as well? I grown most of the tulips you've got Dream touch is a beauty but you'll need to remortgage the house to buy a lot, probably the nicest or one of the nicest I've ever grown. I hope you're going to put a lining in your pergola planter to protect the wood .
I grow most of my tulips in pots now I tend to massacre them and alliums when replanting other plants in the garden . I fill my barrels / pots up with tulips but do lasagne planting to prolong the display. I usually buy new tulips every year unless the bulbs are big enough to get another season out of . The Dutch hybrids tulip aren't ideal for prolong displays over years you want the species tulips like Lady jane - pepper mint stick which are two very nice varieties which get better over time which is the opposite of the Dutch ones.
One of my lasagne planted barrels last spring - Queen of the Night - sir Winston Churchill daffs did have hyacinths for earlier .
Dream Touch from a couple of years ago. they do fade to a purple colour .
@Perki Lovely combos you have! I do lasagnes in all my tubs too. Ive not tried Alliums before, trying them for the first time, Ive planted the Gladiator ones out the front and a bunch of different ones in the back garden. I brought dream touch last year and first thing I ordered for this year, I agree, expensive but gorgeous. Nachtwacht is lovely too. Pic below of mine last year during the purple phase, with nachtwacht too. I'll keep an eye on tulips - I keep expanding the beds and topping them up, but I'll look at a few species ones for the borders if they naturalise well - gosh I love the hybrids though!
Yes I need to line planter and paint it with wood protector (once the weather dries up a bit) before I use it. Not quite sure what to line it with, my others just have good thick plastic sheeting, any recommendations?
@JessicaS You can use the weed membrane you buy in rolls but I am a cheapskate and use old compost bags, I split them in half , fold the top to give a nicer finish and so it won't show any colourful bit of the bag ( black face showing inside the box ) and stable it to the sides . I haven't explain it that well but hopefully you know what I mean, get rid of some old bags and its free.
Allium Gladiator is a good reliable one , I grow hundreds of alliums (I have a soft spot for them ) multiple varieties gladiator are some of my oldest allium bulbs . I bought most of them from Lidl years ago.
@Perki Yep that makes sense, I think ive got a few empty compost bags lying about, I'll have a look! Theres definitely a stapler in the toolbox somewhere as well, thank you. I think I'll have to get a big bulk bag to top up that thing!
Thats good to know on the Allium - Ive never tried them but they look amazing. I brought a GW offer mix from Hayloft too, so also trying purple sensation, nigrum, Molly and christophii as well in some gaps in the border. I would love to see pics when yours are in flower!
