Fascinating isn’t it? So dependent on microclimate, soil and water availability. Fortunately no problem with aquifers here and an unmetered well means I’m never short of water, but it’s so hard that brings it’s own problems.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.

I meant to say earlier, did anyone notice in Quest-Ritson's talk the bit about the very cheap roses to be had from the Serbian nursery Petrovic Roses (not too different to TCL's)? The phytosanitary certificate cost then in 2015 was 35Euro, Serbia not being in the EU. Is this the sort of cost it will be next year has anyone heard? I mean for one from the EU to us in UK

I did notice that and I had a look at Petrovic Roses' website but couldn't make out how to order other than contacting by email.

I've just had a look @Omori , seems like you are right about ordering. Did anything catch your eye, anything unusual there?

35 Euro for a certificate will likely put me off ordering from abroad in future, I really mustn't order enough to make that worthwhile! That was the price to pay into the EU, I wonder what it will be for anywhere to UK next year.

Roses like sun but they also like water. We have rain but not sun and warm sunny countries are often dry. But the greatest difference, I think, is that being more south gives you significantly more light and more light fuels photosynthesis and growth. That's why Austins can grow huge in the southern US. My choice for roses would be something like the north coast of Madeira. When we were there on vacation, I was absolutely amazed at how well everything grows there. I wouldn't mind having a holiday home there one day :)

...just to say re Petrovic Roses in Serbia.. I wrote to him a couple of years ago and I got an abrupt response, which suggested he wasn't interested in sending to UK... however, you are welcome to try again...

..Re Quest-Ritson... I feel sure I've seen that broadcast on film, showing the audience etc...   whilst he is the most pre-eminent rosarian in UK.. he used to live in France but I think he's moved back here... I have to say he's not my cup of tea... some of his posts to the admin on HMF come across as rather arrogant.. and do be careful, if you ever quote him anywhere, that is copyrighted from a publication, and he sees it, I've seen him come down like a ton of bricks on people..   however, I don't suppose he's likely to be looking in here..

    ..these from Trevor White today..
'Devoniensis' [left] and 'Ghislaine de Feligonde'..   I've had both before.. Devoniensis is not totally hardy in UK. and may suffer in severe winters..

    ..these from Peter Beales today..
multi stemmed 'Mutabilis' [left] and 'Bon Silene' - bit thorny that one..

    East Anglia, England

What lovely flowers @Lizzie27 , and beautifully arranged. I hope you get comfort from placing it on the grave, it's a lovely tribute.
