@newbie77 - I added the photo in an edit, just to trick you both!

@Mr. Vine Eye I wouldn't have noticed without your annotation. Having lived somewhere tropical in a white house I found a dilute bleach spray worked on green stains. You don't need much so it needn't drip into the ground but maybe bleach is too much chemical.

@Marlorena I don't get how you have 7 roses there. Will have to go through your thread and photos in this thread again to figure it out :)
@Rickyjones24 I read that about Paul Noel too but I am not that worried. Either I am lucky and the weather is dry for two weeks when it is at its best and then it doesn't matter. Or it will be rainy and I won't be outside that much and other roses would be more or less damaged too. I expect it may need deadheading (or tolerance to browned flowers). Generally, roses aren't reliable plants for impressing someone who isn't into them - they are glorious when they are and often ugly when they aren't. I agree with Marlorena, add one more rose there to hedge your bets and maybe a group 3 clematis or something else to have more interest there.
@Nollie I understand, it looks like it can be quite cold where you are. Maybe 8a rather than 8b? Or is it just one unusual winter? I envy you the Cramoisi Superieur, I've always wanted that one.

  • Glorious pictures everyone , I get so much joy ( and learn so much) from looking at them. Strawberry hill looks beautiful @Tack , and @peteS such lovely framing on those photos, particularly the first two . I know even less about dahlias than I do about roses but I think the perennials set off that glorious deep pinky red perfectly perfectly.

@Tack -- if you don't mind me asking , what ( size and make) are your grey pots for the roses? Two of my containers have cracked and I've discovered a pool of water sitting on top of another one after rain which must mean the drainage holes are either blocked or insufficient.
Kindness is always the right choice.

@edhelka, after nearly 5 years here, I have yet to establish what is a ‘normal’ weather pattern, every summer and winter has been different. Summers extremely hot and dry, or hot and humid with tropical rains, lovely balance summer 2020. Normally short, cold, dry winters. This one has been the longest period of sub-zero temps so far, but often sunny and warm in the afternoons. -8c is the record, so 8b is probably right. Be interesting to see what CS does here, it’s not the climbing sport, Loubert didn’t have that one, but I think it will eventually get much bigger than stated.

@Marlorena, given Nabonnand’s roses seem to have a reputation for heat tolerance, it seemed rude not to try one 😀 Noella is said to be very vigorous, so I’m hoping this might finally be a red climber that works 🤞

Thank you @Desi_in_London. My pots are Elho Vibia Straight Round, I have both the 47cm and 40cm (56l and 32l). The brand uses recycled materials which is nice , have various shapes and colours and they are light, so far so good. My lovely family took note of my birthday and christmas wishes and all contributed some.
Edit 12.5% increase in price since then, Dutch company. To be expected I suppose.
@Nollie Have you repotted GJ yet?

Amazing colour in that penstemon @Mr. Vine Eye, worth looking out for. I have some Blackbird waiting to be planted out, but haven’t done my main perennial order yet..

Ah, not yet @Tack - I have a spot in the ground in mind for GJ but it’s too frozen to dig, plus my usual source for treated wood to make the necessary raised bed is closed under current restrictions. If only I could just plant straight in the ground, but lack of soil depth makes that impossible. It might have to limp on another season in that pot at this rate!

@Nollie That's a shame. There is precious little to entertain us at the moment I was looking forward to a detailed account :D But it will be very interesting to see how it does so very potbound. I am hoping that I don't ever have to repot my smaller roses into giant pots as recommended by DA as a minimum.
