Brilliant, thanks a million, @Marlorena, I didn’t realise that about DA rose food needing the soil microorganisms to break it down, perhaps thats a significant contributory factor to my potted roses not doing as well! I shall add some miracle grow or similar liquid feed to my shopping list.
I also found Wild Rover very blackspot-prone and am trying Stormy Weather this year, which is meant to be healthier, so maybe have a look at that one as well , @Daniel Rutherford. Nice to ‘see’ you back on the rose thread Daniel

@valerieroberts thank your husband for getting on the ladder... great to see your new rose and I hope you get a good scent from it... one of its better features...
Thankyou @Nollie I will have a look at that rose too. I have been quite busy the last month so haven’t got much done with the roses but I’ve got more time now to make sure the garden is looking good for the summer.
Did u have much success in finding roses to suit your climate more than some of the DA roses did?
@Marlorena Trying to understand your recommendations - you’re suggesting that for potted roses, something like All Purpose Miracle Gro would be better but those in the border, beds would do well with DA’s rose food? I have just bought and potted up 3 new DA roses in Miracle Gro all-purpose compost.Haven’t fed them anything yet so would it be the Miracle Gro plant food for them too? Thanks!
Hi @Daniel Rutherford after advice on this forum and lots and lots of research, I have ten new roses that are meant to be more heat and disease tolerant, so be interesting to see if they can cope with my summer heat/humidity... watch this space!
@celcius_kkw, Diamond Eyes now has five blooms and is definitely developing a spicy clove scent already, even to my dodgy nose, so that’s promising!

@MMflower yes that's correct... use the Miraclo Gro for your pots and the DA fert. for your beds/borders... your newly potted up roses probably won't need supplementary feeding for a few weeks as there will be quite a bit in that compost already...
@MMflower In fact, the perfect fertiliser for roses in the ground would depend on the composition of the soil. Using DA rose fertiliser or any other food without having a soil test done is just guessing, although probably a safe bet for most soils... better not to overcomplicate things.
Regarding pots, I find it beneficiary to add some garden soil to the mix. It has some nutrients that are not present in compost/topsoil but more importantly, it has all that soil life -fungi, bacteria, worms. Every time I repot some plant in a big pot, I find worms there and they help with getting the nutrients from compost or manure to plants.
that’s good @Nollie I always feel the important part is to research the right roses for ur garden. I never done that to start off with and just bought DA roses and placed them anywhere without thinking about it. I should of researched them a lot more to find out size, shape, disease resistance and just how they have done for others.
i understand a lot more now and think about what I’m doing. My garden is almost full now, especially when I plant some potted roses in may/June which I have trialled. The thing is for me is that none of my roses are full size yet so their is still a long way to go yet haha!
I've just ordered on line 2 bags 50L compost. I would normally get 2 80L bags of Clover compost for about a fiver each... this has cost me the princely sum of £35 for 100L.. This virus business is costing everyone a fortune one way and another..
@valerieroberts that’s a shot worthy of any risk taking. You’re one of the very few (if not the only other person?) who has an etoile de Hollande. I have mine in a large pot planted late summer last year and didn’t do too well.. I’m hoping it will grow more this year. Do you have any more pictures of this rose? Maybe even some pictures of the whole plant?
@Nollie that sounds so incredibly delicious! I’m particularly drawn to spicy fragrance.
While we are on this subject of fragrance I bought a rose essence spray from DA last year and frankly I was very disappointed with its scent. It smells nothing like the actual roses that DA sells (or any sort of natural rose fragrance) and in fact it smells of a typical cheap artificial rose perfume.. It honestly does not resemble the fragrance of a real rose at all.
