@Nollie I am not sure if the translator is 100% correct about the specific terms but these are the negative points: the only rose infected with thrips - withered blooms - mildew - black discolouration of buds and buds not opening - drooping heavy flower - flowers not opening properly - flowers not long-lasting.
As a positive, all mention outstanding fragrance and beautiful bloom form (when the flowers open well).
As I understand it, the blooms are very petal-packed and any damage or problem (too wet or too dry weather, not enough water, thrips and other insect damage) interfere with their opening. It could be a very good rose when the conditions are right but not a reliable one.
Some photos from today and the recent days (I was quite busy, mostly enjoying the nice weather outside... as a result, I am quite behind with garden chores like weeding and cutting the grass).
Silas Marner on Friday
The same cluster today with the last two blooms in their final stage, just before they shatter.
A lot of blackspot in the back garden, even the roses which were relatively healthy last year. I overdid it with the gaura too close to some smaller roses, it's just too vigorous to be close.
Bordure Camaieu
Just Joey, two big blooms. These are the biggest blooms of all my roses but they shatter quickly when it's windy.
Roses in pots are still healthy. Here is Empereur Charles IV.
Super Excelsa. It's relatively self-cleaning when it's dry but when it's wet, the spent blooms stick together... needs some deadheading soon. Still a lot of buds there, it has a very long flowering season.
Roses in the front garden are relatively healthy. Either there are fewer BS spores or they are more disease resistant or the afternoon/evening sun helps to keep the leaves dry overnight. Probably a bit of everything. Eyes for you doesn't mind being swamped with Rozanne and clematis Aromatica.
It just occurred to me @Mr. Vine Eye, your knautia isn't Melton Pastels by any chance rather than a mixture of plants? It's a multicoloured version.
This one surprised me today, Lilac Bouquet, I would have sworn in front of a judge there were only half a dozen buds in this cluster It's taller than some of the penstemons now, in its second summer. To be honest if I'd known of Lady Waterlow at the time I might have bought that one instead, but still, it is looking quite sweet.
So many beautiful roses to drool over. I look forward every day to seeing everyones photos and hear what people are ordering, what's doing well and what's not. Along with my garden this is my calm place after the stresses of the day.
I have only two definites that I'll be ordering at the end of the week and that's Lady Emma Hamilton and Royal Jubilee (but I say that with my fingers crossed behind my back).
My Eustacia Vye is really blossoming at the moment and I'm loving how she looks.
And Desdemona is still blooming after a month with more buds to open. Was definitely a good choice.
Oh sorry to hear about your garden theft @Tack, how awful, hope you didn't lose too much.
Thanks @edhelka, I did wonder if F. Caroline was too heavily petalled to do well in my tempestuous climate, even in a sheltered location. I think I will try Kaffe Fassett in that spot after all, doesn’t look so tightly packed.
Well of course I had to look at Agel-Rosen (excellent site @Marlorena, thanks) and self control failed! I ordered Chateau de Cheverny, Pure Poetry, Heidi Klum and Rose de Rescht. But I really should cancel it, as now the weather has finally turned hot it’s a stupid time to expect roses to arrive in good condition - plus most couriers farm out the final leg of the journey to my backwater to local man+van and delays are common.
Marlorena, Sorry to hear of your rose replant problem, but I think I can speak for everyone in saying your garden is the absolute envy of us all!
@Victoria Sponge I have another Lady Emma Hamilton (a gift) in a pot in the shade, gets late sun for an hour or so at most. Like Adrian’s it does well in a pot, larger blooms and better colour for me than the one in the ground in more sun:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
