As you can see my Kew Gardens cuttings are growing nicely. This one is starting to push out some new growth at the top now too on the right, so hopefully will look a bit more balanced soon. It’s also starting to flower!
My question is with regard to planting, when I come to do it in Autumn.
Do I plant it up to the same soil line as in the pot OR (and this is what I’m leaning towards) dig a deeper hole and bury all of that central cutting stem so that the new canes have the bottom inch or two below the soil? - Almost as if I was planting a grafted rose, but treating the lowest point where canes had branched out as being the imaginary graft line.
@Mr. Vine Eye Yes I’d bury that cane so the new branches are coming out of the ground. I also pinch out the little buds while it’s a baby to help focus the energy into its overall development, though it’s a bit painful...
@Mr. Vine Eye, how did you root the cuttings? I need some baby Gabriel Oaks !
I took hardwood cuttings in early November after moving the rose, so basically used the prunings from cutting it back to cope better with the move. About 8” long - Stuck three in a pot of soil. All three rooted, but I had to repot them because the first pot was too small! Two of them coped with being repotted but the third died.
When I do more this year I’ll either use much larger pots or, more likely, do rows straight in the ground at my allotment and just leave them there for a year.
Ive got a jar full of rose stems in water to see if any of them will root!
I'm not too keen on the inward shape either @Lizzie27 - as much as I love roses I do want pollinators to enjoy as well!
I'm so sad that kordes only sells bare root in the UK. I had my eye on some others too. Will look at Lubera and decide. There's too much choice 😂😅
@omori I created a wildlife pond last year. It's teeming with newts and other wildlife. And all the plants have gone crazy! I'll try to find some photos and share.
I managed to all the digging out in one day. I do enjoy any gardening that requires a mattock and pick axe 😂😂
This photo is taken towards the end of September in its first year. You can see how much the plants have already taken over
It's not the nicest final picture, but I had a motorcycle accident last year and it trashed my phone, so these are all the photos I have of the process. Will go and take some tomorrow in the sun!
@cats_and_dogs Regarding 'Our Beth' and mildew, this is actually the first year I've seen mildew on roses. It could be the weird spring with cold nights and warm dry days. Hard to tell if it is typical for her or not.
@katsa Glad you’re ok from a motorcycle accident 😦 Pond and cat both look lovely! It’s amazing how quickly wildlife start to use it. So rewarding watching the birds come in for a drink etc.
@Mr. Vine Eye Forgot to mention, glorious day out from the looks of it! So beautiful.
@Katsa your kitten is clearly loving that hole you dug.. don’t they just love small enclosed spaces. I think you’ve done a great job there considering you’ve been involved in accident recently!

@Katsa, I think they only send out bare root abroad, but Lubera have have really good discounts on potted roses, including Golden Gate and Laguna... http://www.lubera.co.uk/plants/roses/modern-roses/kordes-roses/?p=2
Gorgeous rose photos everyone, feeling a bit left out as most of mine are all between flushes, but gearing up for the next...

What do you think?

The order is original tiny pond to new one:
