@punkdoc - OK.  Read "world" for "Britain" although I do watch UK TV and, on a recent visit for the Chelsea Flower Show, found kindness and consideration in public to be in short supply and was somewhat horrified, for example, to see signs in shops and at Wisley exhorting the public to be kind to staff.  I have never seen sales staff being harassed, bullied or attacked in the UK before we left or over here.

@KT53 retired people have loads to contribute to society from experience and time to help others by running activity groups or helping charities do their work to spending their pensions on local goods and services.  Over here family lif is highly valued so there's lot of inter generational social activity and help from elders with caring for chidlren out of school hours.

We don't need to be a burden till we're gaga or otherwise incapable of looking after ourselves.

    It is.  Cherish it.

Of course, there are times when personal misfortune can make it hard to appreciate anything but, even then, with the help of good friends and dedicated professionals, we can climb out of that dark, slimy well.   Perhaps what we need to do is hold on to hope with absolute tenacity.

Yes, hope.  Maybe, the only school Latin I clearly remember is the saying, "Dum spiro spero".  However, even then, I used to think it should be, "Dum spero spiro".  When in difficulty, it's often hope that keeps us going.

I spoke to a fully vaxed person in their 60s this week. They're recovering from Covid at the moment after having it quite badly. They said that they have an appointment with a consultant coming up to try and deal with the longer term effects but apparently quite a few people are reporting odd side effects with the latest strain. Anecdotal only but for those of us who aren't allowed vaccinations it's worrying. I'm concentrating on healthy living and increasing my vitamin C intake and so far we've had a lot less illnesses than this time last year.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
