with (hopefully) most of the population vaccinated, if someone does have Covid their viral load will be less and therefore they’ll be less likely to infect others?

London is much less than half vaccinated - and that was in the first round of jabs. Very low levels of uptake now, I suspect.

there has never been any suggestion that I am aware of that everybody should wear masks during the 'flu season'.

It makes entire sense on places like public transport, I would say, and in clinical settings. We now have solid evidence of just how much difference to such infection spread our masking can make - and proper hand washing, good ventilation etc.

With up to 32 million people dead from Covid in three years and millions from flu over the decades, we should carefully and respectful take the lessons painfully offered - take them seriously and soberly as we look forward. As Punk Doc says, it seems the UK seems determined to forget and attempt to bat the whole thing away as a national delusion best shrugged off. "Don't mention the war".

Sadly [ and this is just my opinion, rather than accepted fact ] we have decided to largely ignore COVID, and to let the "weak" suffer the consequences.
Having been involved with SARS and Swine flu, I believe we have no idea what could hit us, but we have decided to ignore that and are being dishonest with the population.

My view is shared by some of those I have worked with during the pandemic, but is not politically acceptable. This has nothing to do with party politics.
That is how it feels like to me, as a layperson,  though I don't know about the party politics dimension other than it seems money is tight when it comes to aiding the NHS @punkdoc.

Also, the distinction that is sometimes drawn between a vulnerable/weaker person and a standard/robust person seems to be artificial.

I mean, anyone could become more vulnerable to either COVID or long-covid without being designated as such, couldn't they?

    Yes indeed @fire. Su
rely the aim is still to avoid contracting COVID (as individuals) and for the vaccines to boost immunity in the majority, in a safe way.  Therefore having barrier methods - masks and good enough ventilation in public spaces seems eminently sensible behaviour/policy.

I am completely dismayed that the public is supposed to go about its business using stuffy public transport to go and sit in stuffy buildings all day, not to mention the same re any places connected to  health/medical treatment centres and hospitals etc.

Could you explain the 32 million deaths from covid when even the link you provided says people who died wasn't tested and perhaps you could explain how many died from just covid with no other illnesses

Not wearing masks isn't restricted to the UK.  On holiday in Europe on a couple of occasions since the start of Covid and I've seen very very few people wearing masks.  The numbers are probably similar to the UK.

Having read all the various emails , this discussion is going  nowhere
it’s currently down to individuals whether to wear a mask or not and perhaps apply a bit of “ common sense “

Even the various scientists can seem to agree and they prompt there own theories

A reminder from the "powers that be" that it's only sensible keep any sniffles etc to yourself (stay in or wear a mask) and keep up the good hand hygiene, avoid touching your face etc wouldn't go amiss, but they won't do it due to fear of being percieved as a "nanny state" or of possible impacts on the economy if people don't go out and spend whatever money they have.
