  • I suppose that if we could trust that everyone else had washed their hands then touching taps and door handles wouldn’t be such a problem … but when we can’t rely on other people to take the same care of us as we’re taking of them, that’s when it all breaks down 🙄

I wash my hands/sanitise and wear a mask when I go into crowded places … in order to protect myself and others … as well as protecting strangers that I meet, some members of my family are particularly vulnerable … if I became an asymptomatic carrier and infected them they could become very ill or die …

No microbiologist that i worked with, and there were many, would have advised not washing your hands.

I often resort to a tissue to open the doors of public loos on my way out, after washing my hands. Or I just use my little finger to pull the handle and then sanitise after I get out. I suppose it’s just ingrained habit now after years of treating all surfaces as contaminated.
I didn’t see any evidence of the surfaces / chair / armrests at the opticians being wiped down before I entered or afterwards. Not impressed. I do realise that not everyone can be bothered to practice what I’d consider even a basic level of cleanliness, but I would expect a high standard of personal and food hygiene when other people are providing me with a paid for service.

Totally agree, @Ergates, I am very disappointed by standards of hygiene in many situations.

Yep, that's what I do when I've been to the loo. But I wouldn't go out of my way to use a washroom just because it's there and because someone on the telly told me to keep washing my hands. The end doesn't justify the means. I'd rather have a squirt of my own sanitiser.

    And me.
Hand washing before I go out of the house, as soon as I get in again, before preparing food (and after handling raw meat), after using the toilet, after gardening, after doing household cleaning, and any time I think about it in between. More often if I have sniffles/sneezes/cough symptoms and am handling tissues a lot, or if OH does.
And using hand sanitiser when I'm out and about, particularly if I've been touching "stuff" eg shopping, library etc.

We are still doing plenty of hand washing and sanitizing when we are out, the supermarkets are still putting out sanitizers for shopping trollies and hands. Plenty of people wearing masks in the SM's and no one gives you funny looks. My GP practice won't let you in without a mask, and if you don't have one you have to buy one of theirs for 1euro!

Pleased to say my GP's are still insisting on facemasks, but the dentist isn't [ in the waiting room!! ]

Last time I went to the dentist was during lockdown,  although I had my own mask, I had to have one of theirs,  just one of those blue ones 30p from Tesco  and probably cheaper in bulk for them, and a squirt of their hand gel,  they added £15.00 to the bill for PPE.

That’s quite a lot extra, Lyn, but probably included the upgraded industrial masks, eye protection, and PPE etc the dentist and nurse were using. Hopefully changed and disposed of between each patient, plus the additional time required to sanitise the surgery to covid specific standards, which still practising colleagues told me was quite substantial. Really cut down the number of patients they could see per session, especially as there were very few ‘ routine ‘ checkups, and virtually every patient was in pain and needed more complicated treatment. There will be repercussions for years, I reckon.
