  • The ONS data is considered the most reliable because it's a random sample of people with and without symptoms,  all PCR tested. The problem is though by the time the data is published, it's 2-3  weeks behind what is happening out in the country.
If face coverings did nothing, in all probability the case numbers would be even worse.

Daughter and grandson still tested positive on days 6and 7,so had to continue isolation for 10 days. She had asthma as a child,2 inhalers, him much worse. She's double jabbed, him only 10
Said it was same as a cold. Went out with friend yesterday,(she works in a NH) her and her hubby had classic symptoms early 2020, both pretty lax. He's had to go to London today by train. She is freaking out so much making herself ill. Yet,she travels by bus and train weekly, wears her damn mask under her nose

How are the ONS collecting case data? The web site - I didn't see a breakdown of the metrics. Their 19th Jan data though appears to be showing a decrease in case numbers - and it's only case numbers that need to be of concern here isn't it - as the hospitalisations and deaths are 'agreed'? I know that the 'within 28 days' rule is more flakey, but that is balanced with the time lagged/trailing 'covid on the death cert' data. Excess deaths shown here https://app.powerbi.com/view?r=eyJrIjoiYmUwNmFhMjYtNGZhYS00NDk2LWFlMTAtOTg0OGNhNmFiNGM0IiwidCI6ImVlNGUxNDk5LTRhMzUtNGIyZS1hZDQ3LTVmM2NmOWRlODY2NiIsImMiOjh9 seem to be running (as you'd expect) a bit behind the curve as well.

This is a good argument against allowing 'natural immunity' as a substitute for vaccination status.

A Czech folk singer died after she deliberately contracted Covid to obtain a health pass that would have allowed her to visit venues blocked to those without proof of vaccination or recent recovery from an infection.

Quote from an article in today's Guardian: "Dr Chaand Nagpaul, chair of the British Medical Association, said ending plan B measures rapidly could create a rebound in still-high infections and “risks creating a false sense of security” with the NHS still under crippling pressure.
“This decision clearly is not guided by the data,” Nagpaul said. “When plan B was introduced in December, there were 7,373 patients in hospital in the UK. The latest data this week shows there are 18,9791."

  • Much of the general news coverage seems to imply that all the previous restrictions are to be lifted because the Omicrom variant isn't as serious in terms of severe symptoms ( tho extremely contagious ). Any reference to other variants such as Delta appear to have died a death.
The message from the govt is that people ( as well as the NHS ) will have to learn to live with Covid in whatever form.  Conflicting point of view from the scientific community as to whether some, if not all restrictions should remain in place for some time yet.
The overall message appears to be "each to their own" and if you are still alive , don't forget to vote for the party Party.

It does seem odd.   Surely better to keep masks, distance and hand hygiene plus check vaccine status in social situations but allow people to return to work or play if they comply.   Instead of allowing a free for all the should be pushing a social responsibility message.

Just read that of the 14,588 patients in hospital (18.01.22) with the virus, 48% were not being treated for it.

Also France is announcing easing of restrictions about 7 pm tonight.

There is also a newsflash that Boris has just been diagnosed with covid again following the same illness of his baby daughter. He is now isolating again. Don't know whether this report is true or not at the moment.

I think that last para is incorrect as I can't find it repeated anywhere else - my apologies.
