I don't think making this political is very helpful. The world is in crisis and no nation has adequate PPE, or other equipment. We are certainly doing a lot better than the USA, if you compare films from both countries.
Yes but on the other hand many countries have done a lot better than us. There is a decent chance a Labour government would not have wasted 2 weeks on 'herd immunity' and followed the lead of other countries who got on top of social distancing much earlier than us. Many of the people in this week's death statistics will have contracted the virus before the pubs and schools were shut down.
I do not see any evidence at all that a Labour government would have acted differently regarding social distancing or would have locked down sooner. The government acted on the advice from the WHO at the time. China were not being entirely honest about the facts. To add to that, I saw a huge number of people ignoring all the initial advice from the government before lock down.
The vast majority of the UK public did not 'get it' at the time. It is not like we are communist state that would use marshal law as a first option.
The way it panned out, I think enough people had caught on social distancing and lock down were necessary and were even hoping for it, by the time we got it. I saw enough with the supermarket madness, stripped shelves, people shoving each other. I took one look at it and drove to a GC and stocked up on seeds because I could see what was coming.
Social distancing was initially a joke locally, people did not seem to have any concept of what 2 meters looks like. For example 'ducking slightly and running past somebody with a stupid grin on their face' was thought to be the same as keeping 2 meters away from them. Unfortunately a lot of this week's death statistics would have included people behaving like that before lock down, totally ignoring the advice they had already been given.
I would not easily dismiss the role of Cobra either. It is very likely they advised the government that the British public would best respond to a consenting and somewhat voluntary measures after a period of grace. We will probably never know what they were coming up with.
So in the end we really do not know who was advising exactly what to the government at the time. To then assume a Labour government would have acted differently or better is simply impossible to establish. As the new leader's contribution so far appears to have been stating the obvious of 'we need a vaccine' I'm rather glad we currently have a Tory government.
It's all rather irrelevant in any case. The vast majority of people in this country (including myself) did not want Corbyn in power. That is why the Tories won the general election and currently have the enormous and practically impossible task of making the best decisions they can in a situation we have not seen in living memory.
Can anyone explain the maths of this to me? The number of deaths seems to be a much higher percentage of cases recorded in UK than in other countries. Is it how data is recorded or something else? I got this off the BBC news site.

The number of cases is only the ones that have been tested and confirmed. The UK is lagging behind in testing so we don't have a true reflection of the real number of people who have or have had the virus. In the long term deaths per total population will give a more accurate figure I suspect.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Are other countries doing more testing compared to the UK?
From my understanding a lot with symptoms are not getting tested. I know my son and his flat mate weren’t tested. Same with a friend who currently has symptoms. They all rang 111.
You are correct Gemma, as someone who worked for the NHS many years, people still arent distanceing in shops, however, we use to watch videos and anyone can look up "coughing Violet", the dummy that uses purple dye to show how far a cough or sneeze actualy goes, and other bodily fluids, goes much further than 2 metres. PPE like anything else has a "shelf life" beyond which it couldnt be deemed to be safe to use, so it couldnt be stock piled for the event of a pandemic
My neighbours had her son and girlfriend visiting for the day.hes an r.a.c. van driver.so will have been in contact with many people.he could have the virus and not know.they went on bike rides round the village.my neighbour is being paid to stay at home.but it seems it's just a jolly holiday.car here and there.and we sit here not daring to go out.apart from grocery shopping.i miss my mum but I've only seen her once in 3 weeks.and that was to drop groceries off.no police here to fine anyone.what is it with people??😡😡😡
Try not to get mad about it. I noticed our neighbour had their son and grand kids over for the weekend. We have a vulnerable family member and are on the full 3 month lock down. On the whole though, most people are sticking to the rules. It's like bad drivers, we notice them more.
Yes I admit it makes me angry.my husband has health problems.so do so many.i just hope one day soon we can leave lockdown.i dont really care about going shopping or travelling so much just want to sit in mums kitchen and have a cup of tea.

The number of actual cases are much higher.
