My family have all desided to carry on wearing masks in shops. I have noticed the people who have abandoned them are the 20/30 age group. There was an article in the paper last week an ED DR,of 28 saying this age group is now hospitalised and in ITU.

Masks are still needed here in all public spaces and in the street too in busy areas such as towns, holiday resorts etc.

Round here the vast majority still wear masks in shops and buses etc.
Even the younger age groups are still wearing them!

Is the Covid 19 vaccine and mask wearing highly politicized in the UK?  You currently only have about 60% of the population with two shots.  (Better than the US, which is at 50%).  Why are people not getting the vaccine? - assuming it is a doctor recommended option for them.  Is it still difficult to get an appointment?  Also, what is the excuse for not masking up? - also assuming they are not exempt.

In the US, it's all about American rights and freedom and liberty.  “One in five Americans believes the US government is using the COVID-19 vaccine to microchip the population” among other reasons.

There are people here in France and also in the UK, Belgium and other countries who believe the wearing of masks and limited socialising are an infringement of personal liberties.  These people have no grasp of freedom also meaning responsibility and one's civic duty to protect others by not exhibiting harmful or dangerous behaviours.   many younger people still don't think the virus will affect them badly and, as they get most of their info thru unregulated social media, they probably think it's a bit of a con too.

I don't know anyone who is not taking Covid seriously tho when I go out to do the weekly shop I do see people not wearing their mask correctly.   We are close to the coast so the place is heaving with holiday makers at the mo and they are not very clever about social distancing in streets, shops, beaches markets etc altho masks are required in all public places and we do now need a Covid pass to get into restaurants, bars et.

I have also just received a directive form the council which lets us use a public room for our patch meetings that Covid passes with a QR code showing our vaccine status must be produced by all who enter.

Unfortunately it is @Blue Onion the UK wants to be a mini USA at heart. So we have our own crop of QAnon idiots and our government is absolutely useless. The muddled communication hasn't helped but it's is mad how when so many countries around the world have a massive deficit of doses we swim in them in the UK and yet the vaccination rates for the younger groups are very slow. Really wish someone could show some leadership and even go the French way which has worked as they have surpassed us in vaccinations in the past week.

All I do currently is complain to companies on social media about their staff not wearing any face coverings indoors. They seem to think "individual choice" will get us out of a pandemic. They hide behind the government guidelines to just do the absolute minimum. When you tell them that they can go further but they choose not to...they don't like it 🤣

It's a classic case of natural selection in the end isn't it?

  • Difficult to say with statistics here in the UK ( no doubt the same as in the US ).  More than 60% of older people have had both vaccinations here - at least as I understand it but the uptake of younger adults is slow - hence the offers of free ice cream and other "goodies" to tempt those who are a bit reluctant.
I suspect the conspiracy theories are alive and well here as they are with you so that accounts for some refusals to accept vaccination.
Most of the Covid rules and regs have been lifted here - in England at least - but some transport companies and shops insist on the wearing of masks - not all comply tho.  Social distancing went by the board some time ago altho many still abide by it.  It would seem that Westminster are now basically saying that it comes down to personal responsibility - which in reality was what it was about a year ago.
