    Yes, they are used to point at things being presented, when giving a lecture.

    I have a teeny tiny one for teaching, but I've never tested how far it goes!

    I'd need a really long stick for some of the screens in the lecture theatre where I teach! 

    That said, I don't use it that much, could definitely manage without, might be different for people who need to talk through complex graphs/equations etc.

    You can surely do it via an interactive screen on the  computer which holds the files being shown?

    Its a lecture theatre with a large screen and its currently socially distanced! 

    To be fair I do stand in front of the screen pointing with my arms a lot anyway.
