Blue Onion, seem to be unreliable, because under the very sad complete toll, it says "Anyone who has tested positive in the past 28 days",few details, none personal, just someone I knew of, in their late 90s, certificate said Covid, he had terminal illness anyway, and never had a positive test

Overall the  numbers of  cases,  hospitalizations,  and deaths  are reducing,  but there are pockets where the  figures are not so good.  The vaccine roll out is a great success BUT  people need to understand that it takes up to 28 days for immunity to develop.  So we still need to be careful, for a while yet. We are coming down from a very high level so we have a long way to go.

    Thanks @Dovefromabove

I suppose that is the same here.  Should be interesting in Texas, they are removing all restrictions on everything.  Just 100% back to normal, last I heard.  They can experiment for the rest of us.

I’m not sure we will ever know how many people actually died from COVID, thousands of people had a positive test due to the track and trace, had no symptoms at all but died of something else within 28 days,  all goes down as COVID when in actual fact they didn’t.

  • There are actually 3 different ways in which deaths are recorded in the UK, aren't there? Deaths within 28 days of a positive test is the most commonly used one but you can also look at deaths with Covid on the death certificate and at excess deaths. Interestingly deaths with Covid on the death certificate has significantly higher figures than deaths within 28 days of a positive test.

Just had AZ at midday.  Very efficient, no queue, in and out in about 2 mins, only the doctor came within 2m.  No side effects at all so far, but it was only an hour ago. 🤞

Something i don't know the answer to. If you die within 28 days of a positive test, it is recorded as a Covid death.
What happens if you test positive in hospital, but die 29 days later?

What if a person has a positive Covid test (with or without symptoms) and then within 28 days has a fatal heart attack or stroke, or a road traffic accident, or heaven forbid is murdered? Surely things like that shouldn't be recorded as Covid deaths? If they are, then excess deaths is the more meaningful statistic to use.

Death certificates are complex and document contributing factors as well as the ultimate cause of death. If you die from haemorrhage sustained in a motor vehicle collision but also have COVID - the cause of death is the haemorrhage, with the underlying cause being the collision. I think COVID has to be on the certificate, currently, but it’s not the cause of death.
I think COVID deaths are now recorded in two ways - those who died within 28 days of a positive test and those where COVID is recorded as a cause of death (even if after 28 days).
Just my understanding, happy to be corrected.
