To repeat the point - nobody is (or should be) wearing medical grade masks. The comparisons to surgeons, doctors, nurses doing their job are all false. Medical grade masks are effective. You are wearing face coverings, which are ineffective, especially if not handled correctly and washed repeatedly.
Yes, well said Dove, when my Hubby sulked when he returned to work, I suggested he, and the others, who find it "a less than pleasant experience" wear full PPE for a 12 hour shift, then see how they get on!!Which thread was that video by Chris Whitty, saying he didnt want to scare people cannot find it?A staggering ammount of people STILL think they are wearing a mask to protect THEM
I can confirm that it is indeed “a less pleasant experience” to wear masks and PPE for 8 and 12 hour shifts, particularly when you are seeing patients struggle to breathe, calling their relatives on the phone to tell them that their loved one is dying and trying to comfort and communicate with sick patients who could do with a hug from their nurse or family member which is not allowed. Not pleasant at all.
But my point wasn't about the effectiveness or not of any masks ... it was to point out the ridiculousness of the excuse that '... I know from friends and family that shopping and eating out were much less pleasant experiences when wearing masks ...' as a reason not to wear one
There are lots of instructions at times of national emergency ... and this is one ... not all of them make sense to all of us and some, if you were to investigate it, need not apply to all of us ... but the whole point of living in a society is to do things for the greater good when sometimes they're inconvenient to us. Someone I know has a fabulous car, built to achieve very high speeds ... it seems to have every safety device known to motoring mankind, and he is a trained professional driver with years of experience and a clean licence ... yet if he breaks the speed limit on an open road he is still breaking the law and will be treated accordingly. We live in a democracy and the hamfisted governement we have is the one we chose. As part of a society we are not entitled to tailor-make laws and regulationsto our own personal preferences and needs ... if that's what someone wants they should go and live on an island somewhere and be totally self-sufficient ... not dependant on a societal structure to empty their bins, educate their children, put out the house fire or ensure that they have the medical treatment they need etc etc etc.

Chart here. I will stick with my home made double layer good quality kitchen paper with double Kleenex filter and a stiffener through the middle so it doesn’t touch the mouth and nose so easy to breath. Made in about one minute, 96% filter. Goes in the compost bin after.

My point was that wearing masks which many believe are worse than useless is having a negative impact on the hospitality and retail trade. As someone who worked throughout the last lockdown and has had not a single penny of aid from the government I resent being told to go live on an island if I dare to disagree with a policy put in place by a corrupt government led by an extremely unpleasant man.
I understand that everyone has their own opinions on the handling of this virus. I try not to be rude about the opinion of others even if I disagree with them. I would appreciate the same courtesy.
@debs64 I’m sorry if you felt personally targeted by my comment ... that was not my intention ... and by the way, I share your views of our current set of political leaders ... they are abhorrent ... my point was a general one, that in a democracy we follow the rules laid down by the democratically elected government. Whilst we can disagree with the rules, not to follow them is anarchy. The only alternative is to opt out of societal rules by living apart from society ... I gave a metaphorical example of ‘living on an island’.
However if we want to benefit from the many advantages of living in a society we have to play our part in that society.

This article makes some points similar to those I posted, but in a much more concise and clear way:
