Just some info... Before Universal credit the needy had to fill in numerous government forms obtained in different government departments not necessarily in the same building and post everything back. Appointments to discuss cases took ages and the system was already broken. Universal credit was designed to be a one stop shop...
The left won't admit this because it spoils their narrative.
Univers credit is actually a good idea the failings were the ham handed way the bureaucratic numpty nuts civil service handled it. This caused delays with many people unfortunately but certainly not intentional.
IDS is quite a centre left politician and in essence the idea should have been an improvement .
It also gave government more control and helps sift out the dodgy claimants., (and there were thousands) Left of centre media and the far left labour party have used UTC as a big drum to bang in the face of the Tory Party.
There are many who have benefitted from UTC but that never makes the news just like positive Brexit stuff doesn't.
If you wiki IDS he's had a distinguished military career and served his country well. He fought in Northern Ireland and south Africa where his diplomacy and reasonable attitude helped the oversight for The Commonwealth Monitoring force under the command of Major General Sir John Acland
His Constituency is currently a close run thing with Labour but he has held onto it with a small majority . It is not a typical Tory seat anymore and his flair for social justice is deemed part of the reason Labour haven't been able to snatch it away from him., he's been the MP since 1992 . Constituents and supporters speak highly of his hands on approach to local politics .
In 2004 IDS established The Centre for Social Justice a think tank committed to working with smaller charities aimed of alleviating poverty.
He is associated with countless organisations set up to address poverty and was a major contributor in a 300,000 word document addressing issues such as addiction, family breakdown, unemployment and economic dependency, for a think tank called Breakthrough Britain.
A state school educated principled man who has worked through the system, was reportedly a little dull but was often still working well into the night as others had left , according to colleagues and he took a great personal interest in seeing through changes in legislation that have been instrumental in social improvements.
He has worked tirelessly for the rights of the individual which may seem odd. He campaigned to withdraw from Afghanistan, but backed going into Iraq.
in 2006 he has been one of 14 authors who published a detail report on antisemitism in Britain.
I think his intentions are good, I am indifferent to the award myself and many benefit cheats were caught out with the change to Universal Credit, again a topic i have no opinion on.
He has been a stalwart campaigner for Brexit, for decades and a massive pain for John Major as he perpetually campaigned against Major's pro EU agenda.
I just think before we judge the bloke on hysterical media distortions we should do a little homework.
Sorry it's such a long post - but it may be worth considering some of the points made. This is a copy from an on-line acquaintance, and when one looks at IDS in the round rather than just through the prism of some of the opposition's knee jerk reactions, it may be said that he is more deserving of an honour than some who do little other than sing, dance, make music or generally are on the periphery of helping society. imo.
@Shrinking Violet, tell that to folk who have no, I mean NO money to live on , pay rents and feed themselves because of the cock up of the introduction of Universal Credit. Replacing one really crap system, with another really crap system is not a good thing. I'm sure they'll be sending cards of congratulations.
At least just one really crappy system is easier to navigate than all the many predecessors and benefit fraud was rampant and all too easy. I too think Universal Credit is the way forward and was a good idea but badly managed by the civil service at every level and also deprived of funds by George Osborne. Â
IDS is too easy a target for people who don't want to see the bigger picture.
so replace the crap system , but make sure the replacement is ready first, don't just force dogmatically ahead to save their own vanity and ego. Have a safety net in place so the poorest people in the country are not left with nothing. People were evicted because they had no money to pay rent because of the cock up of UC.
Many of those evicted spent the money they received for rent because housing benefit went direct to them rather than their landlords as before.  There are documented cases of such people going straight down the bookies or other such idiocies because they have no idea about money management.
Yes there are faults with the system but they are largely with the management at central civil service level and implementation by local civil servants - low pay, poor conditions, not enough staff, inadequate training - so that needs to be addressed but the basic premise is still good. Â
I've been finding a lot of screws and nails on the roads and in carparks recently. It's probably just a symptom of the slovenly attitude of most people in the construction trade but I like to joke that it's the tyre trade drumming up business. Today in the Aldi carpark I parked the car an inch from running over a long sharp screw. I joked to my wife that those tyre guys are at it again and she pointed out the tyre shop advertising van parked across the road directly in front of the car. Maybe I'm onto something... To be fair though the carpark was a disgusting mess of litter and abandoned trollies. A guy even came out of the shop and emptied a bottle of vodka into a water bottle and left the glass bottle behind before driving off. Needless to say my faith in humanity took a bit of a dive today. We had fun at the garden centre though and I picked up a couple of bargain pots ready for the spring repotting marathon I have planned.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
Tony Blair was the one who decided that benefit claimants should manage their own money. Before that the rent portion used to be paid directly to the Landlord. Maybe if they went back to the old system, there would be less of the evictions due to unpaid rent. Just a thought. Some people can manage money. Others can't.
There are children in this country who went to bed on Christmas Eve in a cold house and woke up to no presents and no Christmas dinner. Anyone who has in any way caused or contributed to this appalling situation doesn’t deserve any sort of honour in my opinion.Â
It’s an extremely complicated issue but safety nets should be in place for the poorest members of society and while children of working parents are cold and hungry no politician should be honoured.Â

There was a head teacher in Kent interviewed on radio 2 last week who said there were 191 school age children in his catchment area who were "homeless" . Makes you proud eh?
so replace the crap system , but make sure the replacement is ready first,
Next time that happens will be a first. I worked on ESA from the beginning and it was nowhere near ready to roll out. Full of bugs, and many claims had to be processed manually because the system couldn't cope with anything other than completely straightforward claims. Fast forward to UC then re-read the section above in italics.
