Sobering indeed @punkdoc.   I have friends in Belgium whose son is lying somewhere on Everest, yet to be found.   His mum has been devastated but his pa still guides treks there and in other mountainous places like the Atlas and Alps.

Dunno about the UK but I do know that in Belgium if you cause a road accident thru bad driving you can be expected to contribute to road repairs.  The EU has a working group to establish how much accidents cost - human impact on lives affected plus material costs of repairs - and how insurance policies and premiums can be tweaked to help recover such costs altho they also note that those margins are currently so fin in a competitive insurance market that this does not change driver behaviours.

I wonder what life insurance premiums are for people involved in the RNLI and mountain rescue and the like.

OK.  Maybe a bit hard on that group, as they have tried to show their appreciation and accept it was a case of seriously poor judgement on their part.
I don't think any of the volunteer rescue services have any problem going to the aid of those who have found themselves in danger despite trying to do everything the right way.  They must though speak through tightly gritted teeth in situations like that of the surfer a few days ago.

yes, about 10 minutes ago, but it's still not charging. Is it the battery which has died? who knows?
    Devon.
  • Could it be that the cable has been bent and has snapped inside?

could be, although I'm not aware of it ever having been bent, but how can I check that?
    Devon.
  • It can happen if it’s been sort of folded rather than coiled, but not sure how you can check it other than take it into a camera shop and get it tested ... then they can check whether it’s that or the battery?  That’s what I do but we’re only a short bus ride from a Jessops. Not sure what else to suggest ... 🤷‍♀️

I don't think cables are particularly expensive so long as the business end ( technospeak) is OK
    In London. Keen but lazy.
