But I arrived at the GC on the way home, just before it closed for lunch, and bought a Christmas tree.
Businesses closing for lunch? and folk wonder why shops are closing left, right and centre. Not that I'm suggesting you buy a christmas tree online.
It's called 'being civilised' @Hostafan1 . .. folk have a proper lunch and a chance to relax and socialise .... most shops then remain open a bit later in the evening. IME they also open a bit earlier in the morning than shops here do. Have you not been watching Rick Stein's Secret France ......... if not I recommend a bit of binge watching
what about folk who want to pop out and do some shopping in their lunch break but maybe don't have time on the way home after work? There used to be a flooring shop near us which opened between 10 and 4 and shut for an hour at lunch. It went bust.
It's a very different way of life ... but, if folk are used to it, it works ... it's certainly a more relaxed way of going about things. If the shops are open a bit later in the evening people will have more time to shop then.
And why should other workers get a decent lunch break and not the shop workers?

I'm a shop worker and I get a lunch break. Some folk have to collect kids on the way home from work, so don't have "more time to shop then" and it's dark "after work" at this time of year. I'd rather choose a tree in daylight.
Big shops with a lot of staff working shifts can give them a lunch break ... small family run shops can’t 😢
it's against the law to stop staff having a break. I think , but might be wrong, 15 mins after 4 hours. How many shops have only 1 member of staff working there? Still on the fence here. lol
Ha! 😆 That proves my point @Hostafan1 .... I used to know quite a few of those little one or two person shops ... but they’ve closed down .... France is protecting them.
Schools in France start earlier in the morning and finish later than in the UK ... and also have a 1-2 hour lunch break. They are also often closed for a half or even a full day one day a week.
As I said, it’s a different approach to daily life.

In an ideal world it'd work, but the reality is consumers basically seem to want to be able to shop 24 hours a day. Amazon has gone from a small online bookshop to being one of the biggest businesses on the planet . Shops are the pinnacle of the " customer service" industry, I'm afraid if they operate the way THEY want to, and not how their customers want them to, they're heading for trouble. Very sad, but it seems to be the way.
Done voting in the rain - it seemed fairly busy. There was a person on duty just to mop the wet floor - I had to stop myself suggesting that all the political party leaflets would make a good floor covering. Been to a local family-run garden centre/nursery for a nosey and bit of a spend in the farm shop and gift barn. That’s all the Crimbo presents bought apart from one.
