@raisingirl I thought stag hunting (with hounds) was banned years ago. The wild deer population does have to be controlled but I thought that was licenced.
Hi @raisingirl, I wish our pheasant shoot would give up. I was hoping that the lockdown would do for them. The also shoot deer for "sport" locally too. We do have large numbers of sika deer round here and they cause a lot of damage to forestry. They do come into the garden and do some "pruning".
There are laws, but nobody seems to enforce them ... it can be like the wild west at times. I've had to run home when at for a walk on more than one occasion.
The local hunt are the same sort of entitled people.

It is. That doesn't stop them all riding around the countryside with a pack of stag hounds, chasing a laid scent trail and when, inevitably, they put up a stag, threatening anyone who happens to see them 'accidentally' illegally hunting real deer

It really doesn’t do to make sweeping generalisations like that … there are arrogant entitled folk in all walks of life … you see them pushing ahead at airports; sending pedestrians scattering as they ride cycles and scooters through pedestrianised areas; driving 4WD vehicles through green ways and bridle paths churning up ruts and making them dangerous for walkers and riders; trying to show off as they plough through other skiers causing accidents; zooming around the coast on jet skis and power boats causing dangerous bow waves; exceeding speed limits on the inland waterways causing damage to the banks and harming nesting wildlife; and parents parking across driveways and obstructing the streets around schools as they refuse to walk a few extra steps to pick their children up from school. The other day, after having waited for 15 cars to pass before taking advantage of a gap and edging his car out of our drive, my son was subjected to a vile racial slur by someone who apparently believed that his needs should take priority. Will my son now assume that all people dropping children off at school are arrogant and entitled … or just all people of that person’s heritage … or will he carry on as he always has… not making generalisations and assumptions about folk he doesn’t know?

I can't disagree with anything in your post @Dovefromabove .... and I don't usually tar everyone with the same brush. But all of the shooting and hunting people I've come across - and I've encountered plenty in my time - fit the description I've give to a man. And they all are men.

I think there’s a problem with the modern definition of the word ‘sport’ … it has a variety of meanings … one of which is ‘an activity which requires skill’ and that is the meaning from which the term ‘field sports’ originated … however the meaning has morphed to include activities carried out for fun.

But surely it’s more skilful to avoid killing something. Even if the skill is impressive I would respect the shooter if they confined it to inanimate objects
It depends on the purpose of the exercise … I eat meat … I want the creatures I eat to have led as natural and healthy a life as possible and to have been killed with as little stress to them as possible. It’s why, when I raised my own animals for meat, I accompanied them to the local abattoir to ensure they were treated well, and it’s why I buy meat and game nowadays from local producers I can trust to share my ethics.
It is perfectly natural for some animals to eat others … but I do not chase exhausted wildebeest over a cliff as lions do, suffocate a gazelle as a hyena does, or carry a screaming rabbit to my young as I’ve watched a weasel do.
From my own observation over many years I know that a pheasant shot by a skilled marksman has no idea of what’s happening … it’s end is virtually stress free … and it’s certainly had a much better life than the majority of poultry bought from a supermarket.
